Check Engine light
Can anyone with Check Engine warning light experiences tell me what the most common cause is? My warning light comes on after a climb but only stays on about 10 seconds, then doesn't come on again for a couple hills. The engine is a Ford 460. I have taken it to the local shop to check the codes but nothing shows up.

I bought the rv two years ago, it hasn't been changed in that time. I will try that. Thanks!

A light that self clears could be any number of things.....
I bought one of the wifi - ODBII converters, then run the app "Tporque" on my phone. Its great for reading real time.. You might need to do this.

Check engine, yellow, lights are emission related, IE O2 sensors the like. Fuel filter is a good bet as has been mentioned above. If an O2 sensor is loose or is failing it might also cause what you are experiencing.
Keep us posted please

The #1 cause for a check engine light is the gas cap, although that doesn't sound like your issue. I agree with the others. Change the fuel filter just because it's overdue and purchase an inexpensive ODBII code reader.

The OP has a 460 engine it has OBD I, not OBD II. Hopefully the shop he takes it too knows the difference

How to make a signature for your RV so we can serve you better.
1 .Click "User CP" on left side of the screen in about the middle.
2. Click "Edit Signature" on left side 7 bars down under Your Control Panel.
3. Fill out your signature information.

The gas cap / tank pressure is calibrated out of heavy vehicles. Page 3.

I wasn't sure what year they went to OBDII.. Anyway. the manual that SpiderRV referred to is also on my web site.. This gives a very good description and explanation of each ODBII code, how its set, what the criteria is for the test, etc, etc, etc.. Great reading if you have one of these codes set..
If its an ODB-I, The codes can be read by counting the blinking of the CEL light. To get the light to blink the codes, short pins "A" and "B" together on the ALDL connector...

Here's some info on this
1996 5.8L Over 8500 GVW & 7.5L Over 14,000 GVW, 49 States & 7.5L Super Duty 50 States were OBD 1.
1997 7.5L (49 States Or Super Duty) were OBD 1. 1997 7.5L California, Except Super Duty were OBD 2.
1998 there were no OBD 1 trucks. The F53 sold in 1998 was a 1997 with an OBD 1 system. If it had a 460 (7.5L) engine in it in 1998 it was a 1997 with OBD 1.
Ford stopping selling/offering the 7.5L in 1998.

Once again iRV2 and it's members prove to be invaluable! Thanks for everyone's help with my "Check Engine light" question. Going back to the shop for a fuel filter change and I will buy a code reader.

That ALDL connector is for General Motor products, he has an EECIV Ford.

If the light comes on then turns off, to me it sounds like a misfire code as most codes will leave the light illuminated until the condition is corrected.
Was the light flashing? That is telltale misfire.
