I try not to buy tools I don't want to/know how to use. I am reasonably handy and will take on many tasks. I use the checkbooks for jobs I prefer not to do, mostly those that require crawling under the coach and for major mechanical work. I was an office type person all my working career. I can change a tire but not a 22.5 inch tire, I can change an engine air filter, but not the hire air filter on my dp. Also I find as age creeps up I am more inclined to pay to get the job done then to do it myself. In my working years I learned that my hourly rate was higher than the shop's rate. Not so much today

If I have the proper tools and can do it alone without suffering days later with a sore back, I do it myself. If weather and common sense dictates, I'll use my plastic. I don't crawl around in the mud and snow anymore. I am not as flexible as I once was.

Been a mechanic my whole life and have a whole shop full of tools, if I can't fix it probably time to send it to the junkyard

I checked both. I opened my checkbook and bought an extended service contract with a $50 deductible. After 2 years I'm down about $800 with a year remaining. I replace/repair the little things myself.

Checkbook. A man's got to know his limitations.

My mechanical skills match my skills in brain surgery. ;-)

Great question!

I know my limitations, too. CHECKBOOK.

Hey, if any of you wonderful retired mechanics are looking for a great house in the mountains of Colorado, our neighbor just listed their house on over 5 acres! I am the perfect neighbor, will even fetch beer and BBQ your favorite meats as you work on our moho.

Did I mention how much I love to wash and wax mohos, too?

Any takers? Bueller??

Bruce

Least you could do is post the price , or offer to help with the payments.

EDIT: Oh back to topic ; tool box. I've even got the 600 ft.lb torque wrench & socket , for the lug nuts on Bruce's coach.

Checkbook? Don't need no stinking checkbook!
Plastic.
A handful of tools.
2 colors of plastic.
Both flexible.

I don't use a checkbook anymore other than to deposit a check into my Technicolor Federal Credit Union account using my phone app.

I pick and choose what I will do and what I won't do.

Case in point most recently:

Cummins Northwest shop in Coburg, replace a blown section of 3/4 inch coolant hose, replace Coolant Shutoff Valve, replace diesel electric lift pump, $1500, Credit Card.

Elite RV Repair in Harrisburg Oregon, adjust large salon slide, install SS slide skis on the bottom edges of the large slide, install sleeve bearings and cog drive wheel at rear end of slide, generator service, air dryer service, check ride height, install outside vent for microwave, $1600, Credit Card.

Speedco in Corning CA, service entire engine, change oil, oil filter, two fuel filters, coolant filter, add BTA to coolant, lube all grease joints on chassis and brakes, check tires, etc. $280, Credit Card.

I never leave home without it!
