Chrome or stainless exhaust tip?

As the title suggests, I am seeking input on selection of a new exhaust turndown for my Cummins. The old one is chrome and rusted through. Does the polished stainless stay that way? Let me know your experiences. Thanks.

I bought what I consider to be a cheap stainless tip. It turns extremely dark brown almost black. Not sure if it's caused by road grime mixed with heat or what but all I do is spray it with wd40 and scotch Brite it and it looks new again.

Have a stainless steel tip. Just need to remove the road grime once in a while.

Well Sir,
When I was running the stock muffler on our coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT, I had a Chrome tip turn-down on it and, it stayed nice and Chrome, without doing anything except cleaning it from the road grime once in a while.

But, I did seriously dumb thing and, went and changed the muffler to one of those JUNK Aero 5050XL Stainless Steel straight through mufflers. When they did the install, those air heads discarded my Chrome one and put on a Stainless steel polished one.

Well, it stayed polished for about a few hundred miles and then, started to turn dark. When I got a chance, I busted out the polishing equipment and, all my polishing pastes, liquids, rouges and more and, I got it back to almost a mirror. Guess what, it turns brown or, sort of a bronze color within a few hundred miles.

Now, does it change due to so much heat being expelled by that particular muffler, who the heck knows. All I know is, the muffler is junk 'cause it didn't do anything for me in performance or MPG. All it did was make the engine seriously louder than it was. And, I now have a tip I have to maintenance if I want it nice looking, like it was before, without maintenance.
Scott

When I bought the MH, it had chrome tips (big ones) installed over the smaller chrome tips. Both had serious rust problems. I now have SS tips and so far I am happy. There are dozens of grades of SS. Stainless is stain less, not stain free. 304SS doesn't care for chlorides (salt). Higher grades or more resistant. You probably get what you pay for as I don't think any of the manufactures state the grade of the steel.

My 10 year old OEM chrome tip finally rusted out last winter and I replaced with a stainless one. So far it has darkened a little, but not bad. Have about 1500 miles on it so far.

Thanks for the responses. Gonna go with a stainless. Doesn't seem to be a clear winner.

Remember, wd40 is your friend as the first step to cleaning them when they get dark

I put on a HD 4" Chrome turn down one in Dec 2002.
I do clean and polish it once a year right before my Summer trip.
Still looks good. In 2002 I paid $46.56 for it.

When we first got ours I just thought -
"Eh, just an exhaust tip - no bling!"
This pic is what it looked like:

after they cleaned it up though - Shiney
