Circle Lake Michigan suggestions

We are thinking about circling Lake Michigan this summer and wondering if anyone else has done this trip. Would love suggestions of things to see and good camping spots for our 38 ft MH. Thanks in advance!

You'll need a day to run out to Mackinac Island while you're in the area, and watching the lake freighters gliding by just a couple hundred yards away while parked at Aune Osborn park in the Soo are an incredible way to spend another day. There are a few campsites right on the river that allow you to back in for a view right from the windshield. Lock tours via boat not terribly expensive, and something you might look into while there. Sleeping Bear Sand dunes would be on my list as well.

We did that trip a few years ago. Mackinaw Island is a must see. Petoskey is great. Door county in Wisconsin is pretty. Roads are rough in northern WI. Consider the steamer across Lake Michigan!

Sounds like fun UNTIL you get to the Chicago area 50 miles in both directions. What a PITA! Lived there 30+ years hate anywhere near there now. Buy fuel BEFORE you get there. Watch out for mosquito infested areas along the lake too.

Our daughter lives in Libertyville and we've driven our MH many times from Ohio to Chicago to visit her. We've taken I-94 through downtown, but prefer the longer and less stressful route via I-294 around the west side of Chicago. We've stayed at the Great Lakes Naval Base RV Park, but it is pretty rustic even though it's right on Lake Michigan. I agree, that except for going through Chicago, the circle around Lake Michigan is a great trip! Have fun!

We did a stretch of the Michigan lower peninsula section of that trip last fall. Did a night on the beach at Grand Haven, a night in Pentwater, a night in Manistee (all three nights were State Parks) ... then spent a night a little south of Traverse City (moochdocked at friends' house).

We're not big on touristy "activities". A simple stroll somewhere "new" is usually enough for us. We found breakwalls and lighthouses, nice "downtown" areas in tiny towns, some nice beaches, etc. pretty much everywhere along the lake. We found enough of what we enjoy to keep us happy.

We liked the Michigan State Parks we stayed at ... not a lot of full hookups, but everywhere we went had 30/50 amp electrical service as well as a dumps station and easy access to fresh water to fill the tank. We were there during the fall .. and had the run of the place. Lots of fall color, nice and quiet. We're planning another cruise up along the lake again this fall.
