Class A Diesel Pusher Break Downs.

I like to fix everything I can myself, but not much experience with diesels. What diesel pusher break downs have left you on the side the road or kept you from rolling? What had to be repaired to get you rolling again? Mileage on Coach at that time? Thanks

Diesels are pretty reliable. You don't mention how old or what brand you have. If any.

My Cummins allowed me to LIMP to a RV park 40 miles away with a broken valve. That was when I had 9 years of use on it and it was already years old. Never had an engine issue that caused what you mention.

My Cat has never been a problem.

Don't over think it. Things break, but diesels are on the road more then off.

We had a breakdown this summer that left us stranded for a couple of days but it wasn't our diesel that caused it. Rather, we blew a hydraulic line which meant that we had neither a radiator fan nor power steering! Fortunately, a local on-site mechanic knew how to fix the problem and got us going again without all that much delay.

I lost the transmission control module, luckily it happened while parked in front of the house getting ready to leave on a trip. Had to have it towed to the shop, cost $3500 to fix, could have done it cheaper if we could have waited but had plans.

Motorhomes in general are pretty reliable. My prior Class A, 36ft diesel pusher. new in 2001 and traded in 2015 at 70,000 miles never had a major breakdown, only one trip temporarily interrupted due to a roof air conditioner failure in 98 deg weather. Freightliner chassis and Cummins engine.
Staying up on routine maintenance, particularly tires, belts and hoses should prevent most roadside vulnerabilities.

Bought a used '04 Mountain Aire DP 400ISL several years ago and have had no problems. Our old gas Bounder had a lot of issues, but not this one. But I have it serviced yearly and I don't wait for an issue. Preventative maintenance works best for me.

Fuel line clamp nut came off of bolt. Fuel line cracked and fell apart.

Rig was towed out of the Sierras. 2003

Fuel Pump failed. Rig was towed into Reno from Donner Pass downslope. 2010

I have learned over the last 17 years that it just will not run without fuel!

Had a leveling rod break on my rear air bags. Had to limp to an overpass. Pulled a Mcguiver and went to the nearest radio shack to temporarily fix it. Drove to a not so far truck service center that had the part that cost me about $16.00, installed it myself and went on my way. It was a 2000 model dp with 150000 miles.

Loose battery cable prevented accelerator pedal from working - I fixed it at the side of the road.

Transmission computer failed. Parked in the emergency lane, drove a couple of hours, and bought one. By having cash and asking, I got a used one for way cheaper, Installed by me.

Air dryer failed. It was just months old. We were towed from Beatty, NV to Las Vegas for repair. Ready the next day.

Hydraulic pump destroyed. Limped into Palm Springs. Took about a week for proper replacement. Shop was having trouble getting the belts back on. They were SHOCKED when I removed my shirt, jumped in and showed them how!

All of these were 100K plus DPs.

Radiator failed, noticed fluid pouring out during walk around after stopped for dinner. Refilled with water, monitored (stopped several times in 105 miles to home). Refilled, drove to Freightliner dealership in Lexington, KY where they replaced the radiator, flushed all fluid and refilled. That was at 120k miles. $2,625.59.

Cat went into limp mode on the freeway, 125k miles. Drove to Cat dealership, they replaced oil pressure sensor, $420 including diagnosis, parts, and oil and filter change. Thompson Cat in Alabama. Great service, fair price, worked us right in as they knew we were stranded.
