Class "A" Insurance and you guessed it, Insanity!
I'm in search of insurance quotes and I'm getting one here and there and learning as I go "All that is Class A insurance"!
I was on one site (and there are many such sites) filling out the information about how many left legged children I have and If there's a "Bad Moon Arising"! Thats Fogerty Ed, so don't even try it!!!
After filling out all this craziness I come to a question for Social Security Number. I don't know about you guys but I don't give my SSN to anyone! I have to give it to my banks and IRS and anyone I'm seeking credit from. But for an insurance quote... Really? If I buy the insurance sure, but for a quote?
I know why they want it of course to check credit. I'm not buying their insurance, I'm requesting a quote! If they want to have a click box to select Excellent, Good or Deadbeat fine. But my SSN for a quote? Not in this lifetime!
One guy said, "you could tell us one thing about your credit score when its something else"! I asked if he thought through that statement or is it just "Insurance Speak"? Look, if I give you wrong information the quote will change, do you think I'm stupid? I'd appreciate you guys not weighing in on that!
But if say my score is Excellent and its Deadbeat I'm a BIG FAT LIAR and you shouldn't insurance me under any circumstances!
They don't ask for your Drivers License, although a couple do. Most just asked if you've had any violations in the last 3 years. And again, if you lie, why in the heck would the company give me insurance?
But don't worry folks the site is secure so don't worry about a thing! They haven't been hacked in days and then it was only 80% of our client list! I'd sooner put my SSN on the front page of the New York Times! At least then I'd be sure no one would see it!
Thanks for allowing me to spout off... I'm sure I'm the only one who feels this way.
Poor Harry, so misunderstood Yah Yah Yah!

They want your SSN to get an "Insurance Score" from whatever credit reporting agency they use. They use that score as part of their underwriting algorithm.

When you narrow it down to the couple that you might want, you will be giving them your number so they can do an accurate quote. I do not do it online though.

Hey guys, I understand all of that... You give me a quote I like and I'm going to buy your insurance. Then you get my SSN not before!!!
Thankfully there are many who don't ask for it for a quote and I'll go with one of them!
NO SSN FOR A QUOTE... NOT EVER!!!

Nothing is safe, but for some reason, i sometimes feel better typing in private information online than speaking it out to someone on the other end of a phone. Either way, the information is inputted into the company's computer.
As far as insurance companies asking for my SSN,, it's happened with just about every insurance company i've contacted for a quote for the last couple of years. I'm with WyoFree in that i would rather give them the information i want first, then if i decide to buy, give them the rest. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way with most insurance companies these days.

I have everything I own insured through State Farm, they do not have my SSN, nor have they ever asked for it. All they really need is your Drivers License number. I have also done a few quotes thru AAA and Geico, neither of which asked for my SSN. Some people have great credit and are terrible drivers, and some people have terrible credit but are great drivers...I get the "responsibility" comparison but really the Credit Score is not going to give them a better view of your driving records. When we bought this MH it was pretty simple, I went to my agent's office sat down and discussed options, and got a reasonable quote. I paid the premium, and then checked with a few other's as mentioned and they weren't even close.

I had Geico for years for auto insurance and had nothing but good luck with them. I switched to USAA some years ago but they don't have their own RV insurance. They use Progressive I believe?

State Farm will most likely be a waste of time. They were way higher than anyone else. After looking around I went with Progressive based on price. They never asked for a social security number until i accepted the quoted price for RV insurance.

Thanks Willy, I thought Progressive was one of the companies who did ask for your SSN for a quote. I'll check it out tomorrow.

All anyone needs today is date of birth and an address to know who you are. When anyone asks you that you don't know asks you for your SSN, they just want to see how dumb you are....I only give the last 4 numbers, even to people who are supposed to have it already.
