Class A motor coach licensing
I am brand new to the RV world and I would like to know if anyone can give me a definitive answer about licensing to drive a class A motorcoach.
I am a resident of Maine and now own a 99 Overland Lorado. We are currently on our very first outing and I got questioned about what kind of license I needed to get to drive this RV cross country.
It is my understanding that I did not need to upgrade my regular license. Do those folks driving class A motor coaches have to have an upgraded license?

The drivers license requirements , vary from state to state, & in Canada , province to province, some states require testing for RV license by weight, others the testing is required once the unit is equipped with air brakes.
There have been many posts here in the forums , on this subject, some even reporting confusion about requirements at the licensing office. 
Going cross country, as far as I'm aware , if you have the proper drivers license in your home state, you are good in others.
But there has been much discussion about toad braking system requirements, that say some states will require them , even though , your home state doesn't, due to the weight ratio, of the toad vs the coach.
If a member from Maine doesn't come forward with the answer to your question , best to contact the state licensing bureau.

If you are legal in Maine, you will be legal anywhere in the US. As far as I can see, Maine has no special requirements for non-commercial vehicles of any size, except for passenger busses.

You should be okay with your regular ME license.

Your best answer will be from your local dmv.
We do not know if your license has any restrictions or what type of class a you have.
Other states honor the license so your state is what matters so check with them with your specific details and you will be certian.

I bought a 45' Country Coach last year and had the same questions. Being from Washington State I was told that, if I own the rig and I insure the rig that I only need a regular drivers license to operate it.

Yep. If you're legal in your home state you're legal in all states, unlike equipment like towed brakes, that varies by the state you're in at the time.

Welcome to iRV2.
The above statement may be true in your home state; but not everywhere.
Here in B.C. ; coaches with air brakes and trailers over 10,000# GVWR, both require a license up-grade.

S.C. requires a license, a class F. It involves a written test, and then a skills test (road test). It is triggered by a gvw of 26,000 pounds or more, and if its a combination vehicle (towing).
The law went into affect in 2005.

Just read s.c. motor vehicle law . what your referring to is a Cdl license. A vehicle with a gvwr that exceeds 26000 lbs and towing a trailer with a gvwr exceeding 10000 lbs is a combination vehicle requiring a class A Cdl license.

Nope. A CDL is not required for an RV. In South Carolina, it's a Class E or F.

Depends on the state. Texas requires a non-commercial A or B for large motorhomes or trailers. Not a CDL. Florida doesn't require an upgrade at all.
