Red face "Class A" motorhome travel

How do you convince your grown children, who try to talk you into purchasing a condo down south, that you MUCH prefer traveling via "Class A Motorhome" than going to one place every winter? I believe, in the long run, the costs probably are pretty equal.....given payments on the motorhome, gas, upkeep, etc. We are lucky enough to be able to store it at our home in Michigan, so that's good.....and we use it to travel to grandchildren's national dance competitions, national skating competitions, family vacations, etc. We purchased our DP used ten years ago, and it's been very economical to own. We love the options it gives us......traveling this great country of ours, and picking up and moving if we don't like the area, weather, neighbors, and so on. How do you respond when asked by friends, relatives, etc.??

Can't help you with the kids but most people we encounter think our lifestyle is exciting, and wish they could do the same.

Maybe they'd rather inherit a condo than an old used motorhome? Unfortunately my son would rather inherit cash so I'm working on not leaving him any! So far it's working.

We love it and respond - "Don't knock it until you've tried it."

You are cruel!. We have told our kids, "Our goal is to leave each of you at least $1.00."

I don’t understand how it’s your kids or any acquaintances business. Do what you like. You worked hard for it and they all can work for what pleases them

Happy travels?

We never felt we had to "convince" anybody. Just like you, we liked it and enjoyed it (finally sold our rig two years ago, after 20 years of travel). You already said it well:

Some won't agree, but so what. Different strokes for different folks.

The only significant drawback is that an RV is a depreciating asset whereas a house or condo typically appreciates, even after taxes. Financially, real property is usually a better deal. But that's not the only measure, right?

Actually everything depriciates even condos and houses however in general the land appreciates depending on location. The reason houses generally increase in value is due to the fact that they are maintained. We are constantly fixing things on our homes we just don't realize the cost over time. We either do it ourselves or have a provider come by to do it for us. The same is true with motorhomes only they lack the land increasing in value. If you keep a rig maintained in excellent condition after the first massive depreciation hit it should settle out to a much lower drop after that.

Let THEM buy the condo, provided there is parking available for when you want to visit. That way there isn't a fight over the will, you have a place to visit, they get to stay in the condo, everybody wins.

Who needs to convince anyone? They're adults and entitled to their own opinions. But anyone who feels the need to repetitively convince ME to adopt their point of view will find themselves preaching to the south end of a northbound motorhome.

And they probably computed the condo would be available to use now, and inherit later.

In the long run they’re not equal. The motorhome will be worth less and less with every mile you drive it down the road. The condo won’t.

True, but when I die it won't matter one twit to me. I didn't buy a motorhome as an investment for my kids. They can buy their own investments.
