I always check the post with my DVM before plugging in (to rule out bad ground, reverse polarity, bad voltage, etc.) and never plug in without protection.
So, why would I want to bypass it? Because sometimes you have to survive. If it died in service, it was probably for a reason (lightning strike being most likely). I'll take my chances getting hit by lightning twice until I can get my new one delivered...but I'll be sleeping in a cool bed and drinking ice cold beer all the way up to that point.
