I have a PT 50 EMS. I plug it in the pedestal. Most power boxes at the pedestals have a cover that can be locked closed with a small padlock after plugging the EMS in.

Excursion 33, we just had the Progressive EMSLCHW50 Surge Protector installed this week. Got it for $289 on Amazon (from Tweetys RV)

I never had one with my travel trailers, but the new MHs have so much more electronics in them. After reading the same threads you did we decided to spring for one.

IMHO--if you get something other than a PI--you will regret it--lifetime warranty vs one year on most others--any questions????????

Not only that, but with a 50 amp coach, you have an additional concern that doesn't affect a 30 amp coach. (I may be wrong, but I believe 50 amp service is more common with motorhomes, and less common with TTs.) With 30 amp service, if you have a broken neutral connection, you get no power. With 50 amp service, if you have a broken neutral connection, you can get low voltage on one hot leg, and dangerously high voltage on the other hot leg!

A progressive EMS on a 30 amp coach is a good idea. On a 50 amp coach is a very good idea.

This is the same way I put mine in.

1) Eliminates theft
2) Easy to replace when it does fail
3) Easy bypass if it does fail (not the case if hard-wired)

I always check the post with my DVM before plugging in (to rule out bad ground, reverse polarity, bad voltage, etc.) and never plug in without protection.

So, why would I want to bypass it? Because sometimes you have to survive. If it died in service, it was probably for a reason (lightning strike being most likely). I'll take my chances getting hit by lightning twice until I can get my new one delivered...but I'll be sleeping in a cool bed and drinking ice cold beer all the way up to that point.
