Cleaning an awning-what cleaning products work best?

It's all in the title, I want to give my awning a good cleaning but don't know what I should use to clean it. Is simple green too harsh?

Simple Green might not be strong enough, if you have any mold/mildew. I use a vinyl siding house wash that contains bleach (pre-tested in an inconspicuous site for colorfastness). Wear eye protection & clothes you don't care if you get bleach stains on.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Ditto Bleach. We mixed our own with dish soap, bleach, and water. Worked great. The black areas turned white before our eyes. Also good advice on the clothes. We figured out after we got "rained" on.

I tie-wire a brick to weight down my brush as it's hard to push down pressure with a long pole.

Zip Dee recommends dish soap, like dawn, and some bleach in 2 gallons of water.

I opened my awning today to try to clean it and when it reached the end of it's travel it locked into place and now it wont retract. Any ideas what may have happened? The drum seems like it is locked in place

I use most any good household shower cleaner. Spray the awning down good after a "light " dampening , roll the awning up for about 20 minutes then open and wash down with water. Pretty simple and easy.

Manual operation awnings have a latch on the side of the roller that has to be in the proper position for either rolling down or rolling up. Check to be sure your latch is in the proper position to roll it up.

Thanks Lori, I figured it out. I guess my lock is sticking because it hasn't been used for so long, I had to jiggle it with a screw driver until it hit the right spot and retracted

How much dish soap and bleach do I mix to a bucket of water?

I have noticed on the manual awnings, if you pull it open too much, when you go to flip that latch lever to roll it back up, it will be much hard to do. So when opening it up I'll only so far. I think one time my son doing the pulling on the cord gave it an extra tug at the end. It just made flipping the latch harder when closing it back up.

When arriving at a campground after it has rained I'll wipe down the underside before it dries. Otherwise the rain residue will leave dirty stains once they dry. Much easier to give it a quick wipe when the awning is at a 45 degree angle.
