Coach searched

I have the right to say no or yes.
Having nuthin to hide, and never a drug pipe (et al) to forget where it is, no fruit or wood contraband (as appropriate per location), no more than $200 in my pocket, and an empty and open safe, I say yes and get on my way quickly.
Got MH searched on the way into NB. Ya don't be sayin NO there! The computer picks folks at random. Everything was expertly re-stowed.
Got pulled aside at the US border while walking back from MX. Ya don't be sayin NO there! They looked at my passport again and said have a good day. The computer picks folks at random.
YMMV.
Happy Trails!

Interesting thread. I recently started a similar thread in regards to Civil Asset Forfeiture that you boys and girls may find interesting. Someone there referenced this thread and I just read through it. I'm personally inclined not to consent to a search but varying circumstances may change that. Like another post here I did consent to a search once after being berated for 30 minutes and they rifled through my car and left it basically trashed.

Anyway here is the Civil Asset Forfeiture thread ...

In days of old when he was bold my Brother drove semi for an outfit called Davis Brothers Trucking (Different Davis Family) they were leased to Truckways, and mostly hauled Water Softener Salt out of Marysville, MI.

He liked to deliver to Southern Michigan State Prison at Jackson.. WHY? Because they did a complete search of the cab of his truck, Took everything out, all he had to do was a quick pass with a wisk broom and it was clean, cleanest it ever got while he was driving.

Sometimes a search can be nice.. OH, That is where I put that!!! I do my own searches of this rig from time to time.

The way I see it is this, I've done nothing wrong, if they want to stop me for some bogus reason I don't care, I don't ever plan on being in such a hurry I cant afford to lose and hour, If they ask to search I will tell them go ahead, just don't tear the place up and put things back where they found them. How do we expect to keep our homeland safe if everyone is afraid of having their "rights abused". I understand they have a job to do, they don't know me from Adam and if they are suspicious, they ain't going find nothing illegal there ha

Just read thru this thread, there seems to be a lot of "NO's" to "YES's", I am wondering how many "NO's" would ready say NO if put into this for real? I knowing my rights, not a drug user, knowing there may be an open bottle of wine in the frig and an open bottle of Vodka in the cabinet and my carry in my console with clip out and thumb lock in place (depending on the State I am in) I think I would say, Why? Hear in my carry permit and go ahead.

Now DW wife would say no and get me my Lawyer.

So we should all give up our rights to Privacy to keep us safe? Read our e-mails? Listen to Phone Calls? Search our homes?

Sorry, I don't think so.

It's your right but that's how our rights get trampled on. Keeping us safe should not require us to loose our rights.

They can check my license and run it for warrants but unless they have probable cause I won't consent to the search. With some of the latest rulings they can make up a reason and search but if for any reason they found something, not likely but as I said having a restricted drug in a weekly pill case can be illegal, it will likely get tosses in court if they can't backup the probable cause.

Absolutely correct. I do not have anything to hide. I carry a gun but i have a concealed permit. I try not to travel in states that wont honor it and if I do i leave it at home. The police do not have a right to search me and i am not going to let them.

My wife is an attorney and she gets pretty indignant. A Short story about that. We live in arkansas and had bought a new car. We drove to Oklahoma to see her mom and dad and did not have a license plate on the car ( arkansas at that time did not use temp plates) I got stopped by a police officer for not having license plates and informed him I had just bought it and was waiting for the title to be issued and showed him all of my receipts. The cop told me i was driving in Oklahoma and had to have a temporary plate no matter what Arkansas said. My wife then started arguing with the cop. At the time i had my 44 magnum in the floorboard in the back seat because we were going to be traveling at night. This was also before Arkansas established a concealed carry permit law. I was trying to get my wife to stop arguing so that the cop would not get mad and decide to search at which point then I was in trouble. I finally got her to slow down with her argument and told the cop I was sorry I did not understand but would get a temp plate before i came back to Oklahoma.

I could not even begin to image the argument from my Lawyer wife over the police wanting to do an improper search.

I like the response "Why?". That seems to lay everything out on the table. I know it would be very intimidating, especially since I am always crunched for time trying to get somewhere. The easy thing to do is to allow it and be on your way. But I agree, this only helps to establish precedence. I'm just not sure I'm in the occupation of protesting, and if I really want to make that stand, if it went beyond, "am I free to go?"

True story. We live on 18 ac, and our house sits 1/2 mi off the road. There is a automatic security gate at the road but only a tree line and dilapidated old ranch fence alond the highway. you can walk through it in places. Needless to say we NEVER EVER have unwanted guest, and our doorbell never gets used. We were awakened by the doorbell a few years ago at 2AM. It freaked us out, and I grabbed my Sig 9MM and walked to the front door. Then I heard "Sheriff's Dept." through the door. I confirmed through a side window. I cracked open the door, holding the cocked sig behind me, standing there in my underwear. and the deputy said, "do you own any horses?". I said no. She said "well you do now, they were on the highway and now they are on your property". I was both relieved and P.O'd and I said [ moderator edit ]are you doing walking 1/2 mile up my driveway, in the dark, and waking me up at 2AM, to tell me someone's horses got out and are now on my property?" I got a response that they were a "public hazard".

I called the SO the next day and another officer came out while we caught the horses. Very nice guy, He just shook his head when I told him what happened and said that is not SOP and that I should file a complaint. What scares me the most is the fact that I was standing at my door holding a loaded and cocked handgun behind my back, speaking to two LEO's, on my property. Things could have easily escalated if the wrong sequence of events had happened. I can't say if it was stupidity or bravado, for them to walk all the way up to my house, becuase i never got to have that discussion with them.

Did a little googling around and came up with this. A single page, easy to read, pretty much sums it up.

What Does the Fourth Amendment Mean?

If they would have been your horses and they got into the road and caused an accident it would have been something.

That has happened in these parts.

They have no idea if you own horses and likely saw them in the road and they ran into your place.

They did exactly as one would expect them to...

Wow... interesting thread...

I don't know what I would do.. there is a piece of me that thinks, I haven't done anything wrong, I have nothing to hide.. go ahead and search... but I also think, what the heck.. I haven't done anything wrong, no, you cannot search my RV..

I find it interesting by simply answering "No", many of you suggest we are perceived to either be a "threat" or "guilty" by the police... I don't like that.. how can a law abiding citizen be considered "guilty" if he is using the LAW as his guide ??

I understand the incredible balancing act police officers do.. I don't pretend to know what it's like.. especially in light of current events which have demonized police as a whole.. but unless I have committed a crime, or violation.. I don't think we should give up our rights just because someone else broke the law because the used an RV for a crime.. Isn't that considered "profiling" ??? Isn't that a big "no-no" by police?
