BUT you start doing a lot of repairs, and can spend big $$ and never know if the $$ fixed the problem or 1/4" more fluid was the problem.
I'm going to replace the sensor and top of the coolant. When I get back home, I think I will have the system flushed and charged.

This may or may not apply to your situation, but my DP had a 100% clogged hose from the radiator to the expansion tank causing a similar issue on hill climbs. I only resolved it purely by chance after replacing the thermostats, cap, and pulling the water pump.
