COLD radiator leaking

I know this has been addressed in several other posts over the years, but I cannot find them.

I have a 2005 Allegro Bus 400ISL Cummins on Freightliner chassis. The radiator leaks only when cold.

got it at Freightliner shop, need to replace the radiator and the RV Care adjuster says he has never heard of a cold radiator leak.

Any help would be appreciated, I am getting ready to argue with the RV Care guys and losing means I write a big check.

I would bet it's not the radiator. I would bet it's the hose clamps on the radiator hoses need tightening. Large engines have a lot of expansion and contraction between hot and cold and can leak when cold and then expand when hot and seal any small leakage. Tell the Freightliner dealer to tighten all the hose clamps in the cooling system, refill the system, and mark the level for reference. Then take your coach and watch the level of coolant. Oh, never go back to that Freightliner dealer.

Thought the 2005 radiator issues was limited to west coast manufacturers who used radiators from Radiator Specialist in Sacramento. If similar, the leaks on the west coast coach radiators were caused by the use of an epoxy-based sealing process for the seams....Hot or cold, this issue was wide-spread for many 2005 coach owners....

Cold leaks are not uncommon buy hose fittings - my brand new'' Peterbilt'' had one from the factory - tighten hose clamps first

a small crack on the seam will cause this. As the radiator gets hot the crack will expand preventing a leak. Spartan had a bunch of bad radiators with this issue. It's kind of hard to believe this guy hasn't heard of this

When I worked as a heavy truck mechanic in Michigan it was common to inspect the ground under the trucks for antifreeze dripping. Carried a screwdriver with me to tighten the clamps. In near or sub zero temps it was very common.

I replaced all my clamps with Gates constant tension hose clamps that did not already have them, especially on the cooling system.. When you look a large diesel engine's, they are used a lot to prevent leaks like mentioned in this thread.

Thanks everyone. Freightliner finally got this thing torn apart enough for us to find a small crack in the seam of the radiator that leaks when the engine is cold . As soon as you start her up and she gets a little heat, she stops leaking.

Extended Warranty company says they have never heard of a cold water leak and so they will not participate in the replacement, even after showing the inspector where it was leaking.

They have a new radiator in the shop and they hope to have it back together in a couple of days.

I would appeal that decision with a letter from Freightliner for backup. Just because the adjuster for your ESP has never heard of this happening isn't the final decision.
FWIW, ESP adjusters are most often independent agents, meaning they work for several different ESP companies.
