Colorado license plate cost on new Outlaw

We just got our card from the county to come in and pay for our first year license plates. The state is using MSRP to base the tax. The formula they are using is 85% of MSRP x 2.5%. We only paid $107,000. Their formula wants to base our plates on $137000, thus making our plates $3200 - this is insanity at the highest level.

Yes, well, it is a government thing, afterall. What did you expect?

Anyway, as I understand it, the Colorado tax law says 85% of MSRP, so what you actually paid is irrelevant.

Colorado wonders why residents form an LLC in Montana to avoid these high taxes and fees..,,No one pays MRSP...You have already paid sales tax and GVW fees ....It IS outragous !

This is the registration fee. We already paid 4.8% sales tax on the difference between out trade and the new unit.

I see. Is this a one time fee or is this per year ?

We are at 7% sales tax here in nj and a yearly registration fee of around $107

Yikes! Is a registration like that typical? What is the annual registration for a motorhome in Florida? Anybody know?

It is an annual fee. It does decline over time but until year 5 it is crazy money. My issue is basing the tax on MSRP and not what you pay. If the real value was MSRP, that is what the dealer would charge.

NV does the same thing. It's called a Government Services Tax, and it is based on the MSRP regardless of what you paid for the unit. At least in NV there's no state income tax.

Don't even think about going the Montana LLC route if you're a CO resident, as CO is one of the states that is very proactive in going after taxes they feel are due to them.

Dating "MaryJane" is not cheap!

WA used to have fees based on value, they were changed to $30 and then they add weight. Tried to add displacement, but were defeated. MH $111.75 Honda $53.75

Yes, from CO also, went from 2700, then 1500 and last year 900. So it drops some each year. We know your pain.

I guess NJ is not a bad place to live !

I feel for the CO residents.

I think Georgia has some tax like that on cars also?

Colo tags

I grew up in Colo and went into the military with Colo plates on my car. In the military you normally tag your car with your "home" state but you live in another state where you are legal to change your residence and tag cars. After a few episodes of paying a tax based on the MSRP in Colo I quickly bought the tags in whichever state I was in.

Colo taxes chased me out of my home state! Progressive?
