I cannot figure out how the sub panel is supposed to get power? Any answers?

I know nothing about your coach, but usually a sub panel is fed by an inverter.
The normal installation would have the inverter transfer switch fed from a circuit in the main panel. When shore power exists, it is simply passed through to the sub panel, but when shore power is NOT present, the inverter would send power (inverted from battery power) to the sub panel.
It sounds like your inverter is OFF, or defective. If you never get power to the sub panel, under any conditions, then I think your inverter transfer switch is defective.
You probably have simply bypassed your inverter with the added wire.
