Converter issue ... Need Help

2000 Newmar Dutch Star Gas 3364

circuit breaker for the Converter is tripped and won't reset. I'm not an electrician, but the converter seems to have power going in and out.

How can I tell if its the converter or the circuit breaker? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Would like to try and fix on my own. We have only had the RV since 01/2019 - New to RVing.

Fuses seem to be fine, the neutral wire was a little loose, tightened that, on of the black wires on top was also a little loose, did not make a difference, breaker will not reset.

Maybe i should change the breaker, and if that doesn't work, maybe a new converter / charger.

Help ... it's the breaker on the right

Are you sure that that is the breaker for the converter? A tripped breaker will not allow power to flow. If it is tripped and won't reset then you could not have power to the inverter. Unplug from shore power. Disconnect the black wires from the rear of the breaker then remove it and take it to a hardware store to get a new one.

Install the new one. Turn off all of the breakers.Now unplug the converter and plug in a fan or light into it's outlet. Plug into shore power. Now turn on each breaker one by one. Check to see what is on that circuit and write it down. When you get to the converter the light should come on. Now you know. Plug into the converter and measure the output. Check for 12v after the terminal block that follows the output. That could be a fuse or a cracked terminal. If you have power then you should be good to go. Post your results please.

Did you turn that breaker off before you turned it on. You need to do that to reset it.

If it don't reset then, unplug the converter and try again.

If the converter has power in (how did you determine that) and power out (did you measure 12v at the converter bus without any battery connected?), then clearly the breaker for the converter/charger is NOT tripped and that breaker serves something else. It's not unusual for the breakers to be incorrectly labeled...

unplug the converter from the socket and plug in a lamp or radio. does it come on? if it comes on go flip each breaker off until you find the one that feeds that outlet. if it does not come on turn each breaker all the way off and the back on to reset it until you find the one that powers the outlet. if this does not work you'll probably need to open up the distribution panel to find the problem.

Can this be tested using the Generator?

Yes, the generator is a substute for shore power and will power what you need powered.

I would suspect that the 20 Amp breaker is for your roof AC and not the outlets. Outlets are usually on 15 Amp breaker. You can use your generator but I would unplug the battery charger from that outlet and plug it into a 12 gage extension cord and then read the voltage coming out of your battery charger. It should be 13.2 volts or above (or at least build up to that as the batteries charge).

The OP said it was the breaker on the RIGHT.
That's a 15 amp breaker.

If he plugged the converter / charger into an extension cord, where would he plug the other end of the extension cord in ?

Doesn't seem like he has any shore power nearby.

By the pic, it clearly shows that the breaker that is tripped is a 20 Amp breaker. So, are you kidding about where to plug the other end of the cord into? Im assuming the moto coach wil run, right? Maybe he can drive it somewhere like oh, I don't know, his house?

The Parallax 7455 is a single stage converter/charger. I suspect as others it only needs a 15A 120V AC supply. I don't believe the 20A tripped breaker is the feed for the converter plug in.

I do think the mini auto reset 12V breakers (2 shown in pictures) are faulty and not allowing 12V out to charge the battery/run the house 12V loads. Most of these breakers are "auto reset" but there are manual reset breakers like this with a small reset button on one side. I was not able to see all sides.

OP - check for 12V at the inlet/outlet of the 12V breaker with a digital volt meter (12V direct current). Enlist the help of a friend who knows 12v DC and 120V AC if unsure - or a journeyman electrician.

Finally - I would replace the single stage converter/charger with a newer 3 or 4 stage intelligent charger. Your batteries will thank you.
