coolant filter valve

I have a 1997 Monaco Windsor with an 8.3 Cummins engine. I am cleaning my cooling system and have drained the coolant, added the cleaner, and flushed it after running the engine for a couple of hours. Now it's drained and I removed the set screw holding the coolant filter valve. I can't move the coolant filter valve to drain the pressure to the filter. I HAVE to do that so that the pressure in the filter is down, but the valve is stuck. I sure don't want to break the handle to the valve, but the darn thing won't budge. Does anyone have a fix for me?
I'd sure appreciate a response here or via email. atlasven@me.com
Thanks.

Try using a penetrating oil like PB Blaster on the valve threads and let it soak for awhile. Over night would be good, if you give it a couple doses.

Common problem. Mine has been frozen for 9 years at least.

I just twist off the filter encased with a ziplock bag. I might lose a pint of coolant at most.

Then have the new filter ready and spin it back on.

Or....I could free up my broken valve, buy a new one made of brass rather than plastic, remove coolant and replace the valve.

I am too lazy for that hassle.

If it's rubber hose up to valve, pinch it off

coolant valve

If you look on the side of the filter housing next to the oil filter there is stops on the valve, using a wrench on this end is less likely to break the valve. Been there and done that. About 50.00 bucks at cummins parts house if you break it. Good luck. Dan

I want to thank all who replied to this post. I tried PB Blaster but it didn't work. I finally just forced the filter off and put on a new one. It seems to be the only sensible and economic thing to do. I talked to Cummins and they said that it could be a costly mess to try to get the valve off. Hats off to you all.
