Cruise Control vs Exhaust Brake

I have learned that the 207 HR Endeavor will allow the Cruise to work with the exhaust brake switch on. The 2006 HR Endeavor will not allow the cruise control to turn on with the exhaust brake switch on. Is this a different in the wiring of the switch or a parameter set up in the ECM . I would like for my o6 Endeavour to work like the 07 and don't know who can make it respond LIKE THE O7. They both have the ISL 400 Cummings and the same Allison transmission. THX for help.

"Benbow"......My 2005 Diplomat did not allow leaving the exhaust brake switch on while using cruise control. I know in 2005, you could not change it via the computer (Cummins Insight program). When I had my Diplomat, there was a nice old guy named Homer, who made a product called the "Brake Switch". It rewired the system s you could leave the exhaust brake switch on. It wired into the wiring in your run bay. I bought one and could never use it because Monaco screwed up the wiring from the factory. I wish I had kept it, several people have asked about them recently.

The "Brake Switch" is no longer available. You might do a search, the "Brake Switch" was not that exotic and I know some others built their own. Some say you don't need one, but I saw it as a safety issue. In a panic stop, it was one less thing to worry about (turning on the exhaust brake).

Take it to a Cummins shop that knows about the "Latching Program" for the ECM. Have them re-flash the ECM to include this program.

The cost was between $300 - $400 back in 2010.

Well Gang,
We must have gotten lucky. Our coach, an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the C-7 330HP CAT, will allow for the E/B and Cruise to be on at the same time. However, the E/B will not work if the cruise is SET. That is, if I've set the cruise to keep my speed at set amount, and then start going down a grade, even though the E/B is ON, it will not take effect due to the fact that the cruise is operating under the "SET" conditions.

Our 2004 Newmar MADP not only allows the cruise control to be set with the exhaust brake on, but the exhaust brake actually kicks in if the speed climbs over 5mph faster than I have the c/c set to.

It does work a little differently, however.

Normal e/b operating (without Latching Mode) means that as soon as I lift the accelerator pedal the e/b will engage, downshift if necessary and slow the rig. It also flashes the brake lights as if I had stepped on the brake pedal... a nice safety feature for anyone following you.

BUT... if I have the c/c control set, the e/b won't engage until we are 5mph faster than the c/c setting - like when going downhill - and it doesn't flash the brake lights.

Just another perspective...

Our '02 DSDP would turn the center brake light on when the exhaust brake came on, but not the normal brake lights.

Honestly, I don't know which brake lights come on... I only see the red light in the rear view camera and I assumed it was all the brake lights - it may very well be just the center light. I'll have the wife check next time she's following me

Yours may well be set up differently than ours was. YMMV

This subject of brake lights activating when an E/B or, Jake (Compression brake) has been discussed oh, about a thousand times and, for the life of me, I cannot understand why, if yours (anyones) is wired in such a way that, only the center brake light comes on, when either of those brakes are in activation. I mean, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, to a person following your coach?

If it were me, and I was following your coach, normal thinking would be that, hmmmm, he/she must have the other brake lights out 'cause only the center one is working. I mean, of the few zillion cars out there with "three" brake lights, a left, right and center, how many of them, only have the center one come on at any given time? The don't! It's either all or, nothing.

I certainly don't mean to deviate from the OPs original post and questions/statements here.

Yeah, we've kinda hijacked this thread a bit - sorry OP - but I have a theory as to why they might program only the center brake light to come on with the e/b:

I think the center brake light might just be a heads up for followers that the rolling barn in front of them will be slowing down a bit - maybe quite a bit. But because we haven't actually applied the brakes, all the lights don't come on... it's kind of a technicality, I suppose, but I get it.

And honestly, the more I think about it the less I care which lights come on. Car drivers don't know anything about exhaust brakes and what they do, nor do they care, but the center brake light might at least get their attention, even if it just gets them to ask themselves, "Did he just apply the brakes?" At least they're looking

My two cents; worth every penny

I too guess I was lucky in the draw with the coach we got...

I 'always' have my exhaust brake ON... and it works...
99% of the time, cruise on or off or set or not...

I like to have it set in the case of an emergency stop and need the extra braking...

that's the definition of 'emergency' unplanned and NOT the time I want to be reaching for a button!

the only drawback is IF I let off the throttle when not on cruise or the cruise has to slow me down a lot,
it will downshift... and to me that's not a big issue !

Try this the next time you are out on the road with the coach.

When you want to coast or slow down WITHOUT having the exhaust brake activate or the Allison downshift, let up on the accelerator pedal completely BUT do not remove your foot from the pedal. Just hold it on the pedal ever so lightly. It may take a little while to get the "feel" of your pedal but trust me there is a spot where you will not be feeding the engine any fuel but yet the engine hasn't been triggered to activate the exhaust brake or downshift the Allison.
