Cummins 210 Hp question

My newly purchased ..never driven...95 Vectra has a 210 hp Cummings, a friend who drove tractor trailers at one time told me the 210hp was not sufficient power to tow my 96 Escort wagon through mountains...

Having no experience (first MH) is this a fair comment..

It is pretty underpowered. My previous 230 HP B5.9 in a 22000 lb MH would pull my Jeep Ok on steep roads and it would pass the 18 wheelers. I finally put a Banks Powerpack on it which really helped. The question is how heavy in the MH? 210hp is pretty underpowered but it will climb but slowly. You will 10.5+ MPG maybe even up to 11 mpg in it.

Does it have the Allison 4 speed or the 6 speed transmission?

Does it not have a turbo on it?

We had an old 190 Cummins several years ago. Definitely a weak sister in the mountains and we pulled a very light Tracker. Yours is bigger, but I am betting a bigger/heavier coach as well.
You won't be breaking any 'fastest to the top' records for sure.

Allison 6 speed and yes a turbo..... yes it is 230 and not 210 and the 10 mpg is sooo encouraging... we got literally wiped out in the downturn ... so a care free retirement has become a dollar strectching excercise.... but we have not set our plans aside... just not a new coach... and our trusty escort as our toad... tis what tis.. but in the game...so a potential 11 mpg is a welcomed input... many thx

Like I said in my previos MH with the 230hp B5.9 and towing the Jeep Wrangler I rountinely got 10.6 mpg on hilly roads. Straight and level I could get 10.8 mpg. A lot depends on the winds and the air temperature. I installed a Banks Power Pack kit which gave me just a ton more power. It is not an easy job to install it but if you follow the instructions line by line it can be done by anyone with some mechanical experience. The biggest problem is you have to take the turbo apart to change the housing. DO NOT DO THIS IN YOUR GARAGE. Take it to a turbo rebuild shop that has the experience in pulling them apart. The housing will be rusted on. It is so easy to damage the turbine blades when pulling the housing off or putting it on. Setting up the fuel takes a little time and you do it by watching the EGT gauge they give you. At wide open throttle going up a hill with max load you want 1300* F. If it is not there then you have to adjust it. Lots of tricks I learned. If you email me at mike.c@mindspring.com I will email you the instruction book so you can see what you have to do.

I would drive it for awhile and see if the performance is acceptable to you.

Just relax and enjoy the scenery-and ignore the honking behind you. Really, you do not have to beat the Prevosts to the top of the hill.
