Cummins B5.9 exhaust gasket--$7000
Does $7000. sound about right? I have a Cummins B5.9 mechanical 12 valve that had exhaust manifold leak. Took to service company and they replaced with new manifold and gasket, $1162. Couple of weeks later, after two short trips totaling 300 miles, still showing smut from leaking. Took back, now it seems that one of the tabs on head that the exhaust manifold bolts into is broken and I need a new head! They said it was probably a manufacturing defect in head from 23 years ago and it just now broke because of the stress of installing a new exhaust manifold. OK, this is one of the possible explanations of what happened. So I find a new head for $621 delivered to shop. Thermostat, exhaust and head gaskets, and other parts were $1000.00. Mechanic that did R&R turned in 49 hours of shop time and took 14 weeks. Service writer said that too many hours and only charged 43 hours at $100 per. That was about $7083. Sounds about right huh?

So sorry to hear that. I just had my MH in for Gennie repair @ a Cummings/Onan repair shop. $500.00 / $500.00 estimate.
$67.00 parts $400 something labor and that was after the service writer took off $100 bucks from the machinates time sheet. They got you good though. Sorry for the bad news.
Anything said about warranty usually they give 30 day or 1200 mile at least.
I think that is the norm here in MN.
Happy New Year,
Tim

I have a year warranty on the new head I purchased. When they finished the work after 14 weeks, I drove home and worked on it for a couple of days. Installed EGT, turbo boost, and temp gauge because this old MH never had any gauges. Then loaded up to go out of town for weekend after Thanksgiving. Engine stopped a half mile from house and I called wrecker from my road service and had towed back to shop. This was Friday after Thanksgiving and they were closed but two guys were there working on personal project. One of them was the mechanic that worked on my MH. Asked if he could look at it and he said sure. Asked if he could look at it then, and he said no, he was not working for the shop, that he was not supposed to be there. Told him I was not supposed to be there either. He said nothing, did nothing. He looked at it the following Monday and it was just the wire going to the fuel pump had fallen off. Anyway, I only wanted to get the MH away from them. Which I have done. It has traveled a hundred miles since I got it back. I am hoping this engine is now fixed.
Anyone have a feel for how many hours a shop would charge to remove and replace a head on this B5.9? I know it is harder because of the pusher location.

Sounds like they overtorqued the new manifold and broke the flange.

I agree! If the mechanic did not follow the Cummins torquing procedure, I'm quite sure that's what happened.

Over-torquing would be my guess also. My problem is that I do not know how to prove that. I asked South Plains Cummins in Austin and showed them the old, broken head. They said it could have been installation error, and it could have been a defect in the original 23 year old casting. So, unless someone can tell me how to proceed, it is just my guess against theirs.

I retired from a large truck and construction equipment shop with a crew of many different caliper mechanics. The mechanic probably cross threaded it putting it in, or snapped it off, taking it out and did a bad job drilling it out and re-threading it. Some mechanics will not own up to their screw ups and service writers are not mechanics. They take the word of the mechanics.
I just find 49 hours of labor shocking.
