On our first short trip with our DP and I always take my road bike with us. This time I mounted the bike rack on the Blue Ox bar that goes into the receiver, fits perfect...but after 50 miles my $5,000 road bike is covered in dust and grit!

I've been searching my triathlon and cycling forums for a cover and I'm not finding much. Anyone have a good cover they use?

Same thing happens to my motorcycle even with the cover on.

Last time I had the Street Glide on the Hydralift, I knew it'd be raining on the way. So I put the standard HD cover over the bike (to protect the painted surfaces), then wrapped a heavy duty tarp with eyelets every two feet and tied that around the whole deal. Secured it with many tie straps and drove 200+ miles, no problem. Bike was as clean as when I left and it rained at least 1/2 those 200 miles.

I use this. Still gets a bit of dust. Its designed for a bike rack that has the rack for the upper cross bar. Mine has wheel slots so I turn it upside down. Seems fairly durable, its on its third snowbird trip. It has flaps to keep it deflated and a drain hole if used right side up. I'd buy another one.

You could also put a tarp under the bike rack then fold it up around the bike. Then put your cover on it.

I travel with a very expensive road bike as well. I ether break it down and put it in the basement, or just leave it together and put it inside the coach. Use tie downs to keep it up right so it does not move around.

I used to bring it in the coach...until I rubbed the chainring on something I shouldn't have inside.

Then I decided it was better off outside.

I see that cover is "water resistant". How does it do in a rain while driving?

It does get a mist of water. Since I have to use it upside down I think it gets more wet than if used correctly. They are not too expensive, if I had a $5k bike I'd consider buying two covers and double bagging it.

I feel your pain. Never found a suitable solution so only put the training bikes on the rack, and race bikes travel inside below.

Thinking about mounting a cargo carrier on the roof for the bikes

I use this for our road bikes. Bikes still get a little dirty but better than nothing. I have a platform (Kuat NV) bike rack so this works well. It is water resistant, not water proof.
