damon ultrasport

I am new to all of this so be gentle. We just bought a 2000 damon ultrasport 40' with a cummins isb diesel motor. We were coming back from Fla. on our maden voyage and having trouble going through the mountains of Virgina. We are having black smoke out of exhaust on hills and on flat terrain. We are having very bad issues with motor on hills (max speed 35mph). I changed fuel filter before leaving on our 3000 mile trip. Can anyone tell me what might be causeing my power issues?

I'm not a diesel expert but have had some experience.
Black smoke usually means not enough air or too much fuel.
  • Very dirty air filter.
  • Check for "critter nesting" somewhere in the air intake.
  • If it is turbocharged, the turbo could be frozen.
  • One or more fuel injectors are dirty and not closing off - meaning they are still spitting fuel when they shouldn't.
  • Weak fuel pump - less likely with black smoke.
Obviously, this is not a complete list and someone may have a better solution for your particular engine setup.

Hope you get the problem resolved quickly and get out there and enjoy your new motorhome.

Thanks for the info

I removed both air filters and they are huge and dirty. I will try and replace tomorrow along with a new fuel filter. I tested the turbo while I had it apart and it seemed fine. Will put all back tomorrow and test it out on the road to see what happens. Will repost outcome. Thanks

Kevinkate, keep in mind that your coach probably has the 275HP ISB motor (like our does) so even after you cure the smoke problem, you will have to be patient on the long hills. One thing the ISB's hate is a dirty air filter so it is good that you are replacing that. Your chassis also has 2 fuel filters, a primary and secondary, so change both. You could have one of the chassis that has a third filter mounted on the frame rail. The only way to be sure is to call freightliner with your chassis vin to find out. Good luck with your coach, when you get it all sorted out it will be a great rig. Our 2001 38' Sportscoach gets over 11 MPG at 65 MPH so you will like the economy. DACOTAH
