A new Hess station opened at Exit 11 on I20 in SC that is close to where I live. Since it has bulk DEF and is nicer than the BP station on the other side of I20 I started going there. Then on a recent visit I noticed that on the truck side the diesel pumps said the posted price is for cash and credit card is 4 cents higher. While I have seen a notice like that in small print on the price signs in front of gas stations and truck stops this is the first time I have seen it only at the pump.

The Hess station also has diesel fuel pumps in the front and I had used those before and not noticed the pricing difference. So on my next trip there to get mogas I checked and those diesel pumps do not show a difference between cash and credit.

So if you go to this Hess station for diesel, use the pumps in front. Or go to the BP station on the North side of I20 where they don't have this deceptive pricing.

By the way, if you are traveling I20 to or from GA, the diesel price here in SC is far below the price in GA. There are no truck stops at Exit 1 and I have not checked the diesel price at Exit 5. Exit 11 has the lowest I have seen recently.

When I was still trucking, I EXPECTED a lower price for cash. No deception intended nor perceived possibly due to the volumes involved.

Deception is in the eye of the beholder.

There usually is a premium paid for the use of credit cards due to the charges from the card companies to the vendor.

In Arizona diesel prices at truck islands are higher than at the auto diesel pumps due to road taxes imposed by the state on OTR trucks

In Indiana it is the opposite. Diesel for commercial trucks is lower priced, passenger and RV lanes are higher due to a 7% sales tax imposed. Of course the Price shown on the sign out front shows the truck price. When I fueled using the truck lane, the cashier manually added the taxes to the ticket..

I understand the higher price for credit card, the deception is showing one price on the sign out front and charging something different that you don't know about until you are parked at the pump.

I have always wondered why diesel often has a lower cash price compared to credit price, but why is it not the same for gasoline? I mean if it only has to do with credit card charges, why not handle both diesel and gasoline the same?

But then I also wonder why we park in the driveway but drive on the parkway....

I've seen many stations where gasoline is handled that way.

If it was posted on the pump then there is no deception or law broken. Nobody is forcing you to buy so just drive away to another station more to your liking.

I wish someone would explain why it's illegal to charge more for credit card use anywhere else but fuel stations. You don't pay for credit card use at the grocery store, appliance stores, Home Depot etc.

Ya I have seen other Indiana gas price laws.
I Don't buy gas or diesel in IN because of it.
they have one that prevents them from advertising the full price of gasoline
something like "tax shall not be included in the advertised price" I wpould say how i really fell about it, but this is a family web site.

Just another way to squeeze a few extra bucks out of the uninformed or stupid. Probably not strictly illegal, but definitely deceptive marketing. Fool me once, shame on you: Fool me twice, shame on me. I let my dollars do the walking and won't deal with the scams, be they individual stations or states (Indiana). Their loss, not mine.

Dip Don, the law was repealed that kept retailers from adding a charge card surcharge....many retailers tho have opted not to take advantage knowing it may decrease their sales
How fuel stations were legally allowed to add this surcharge but not other retailers is still beyond me.

Most truck stops in Oregon advertise fuel without the tax, $0.30

Oregon - Assumes no state use fuel tax (30 cents) with PUC# or "Weight Receipt".

which is the case for items bought in stores isn't it. Annoys the hell out of me - pick out something, glance at the shelf label price and proffer the correct change and then find they want a dollar or two more because state taxes are not included. Why would fuel be any different.
