DEF

I fortunately do not have to use DEF but I wonder what happens if you run out of DEF out on the road?

There's will be different levels of warnings, that will limit engine power and if you get down to 5% left in the tank you will be limited to idle. There is a good article in the latest FMCA magazine.

The motor will stop and not restart. Running out would be hard for the following reasons. First if you run low on DEF the engine will derate and only allow you to go full speed. Then the engine will go into limp mode. Next the coach will only idle, and finally the will shut down. These steps could be different depending on your engine manufacturer. The purpose of all this is to never let you run out of DEF.

There is just no reason to ever run out! I buy all of my DEF in 2.5-gallon jugs at Walmart, using about one jug per 100-gallon fill-up. The DEF tank holds around 13 gallons (enough to go coast-to-coast and most of the way back), and I ALWAYS keep a jug or two in the "basement."

Also just use the 2.5 gallon jugs. Menards carries a brand that is $8.88 per jug. About $3 less than I've seen elsewhere.

That's about the same as Wal-Mart's house brand.

I was told by my mechanic that if you run out of DEF,
you can continue to drive. However, you will not be
able to start the engine with the DEF out.
Curious as to the facts.....

Yes, you can continue to drive - but the engine will derate and you will have warning lights.

I have never come close to running out. I think you would have to be trying if you got stranded.

I'm sure it has happened, but I've never even heard a story about anyone being stranded from running out of DEF. As far as I am concerned it is a non-issue.

I am concerned about the added cost and complexity of the exhaust after treatment hardware.

The upside is - my exhaust pipe stays shiny & clean, the air stays cleaner and, I believe that post-DEF motors make slightly more power than pre-DEF motors (perhaps due to less aggressive EGR?).
