A major faux pas for Navistar, but they had already hedged their bets buying another company's DEF technology.
They made a big to do a year or two back, claiming they were the only ones to meet the EPA 2010 without SCR/DEF and made some of snide remarks about Cummins, Detroit & Mercedes engines in unofficial conversations. I'll bet the engineers who convinced the Navistar execs they didn't need SCR are cleaning latrines in Wakarusa about now.

Its too bad really. Competition and alternatives are usually a good thing, long term, for the consumer.

Navistar management has all but killed the entire corporation. Sound familiar?

according to Construction Equipment magazine customer satifaction with the new def and egr motors is not very good. Failures and lack of parts are big gripes. Lots of down time. When the truck is down they don't stop the payments.

I remember when Alternators came out and the industry said they were a fad, same with fuel injection

After a year and a half of use, the only real complaint I've got against DEF is the chemical blend of DEF itself. Certainly it could be blended to withstand high temps or prolonged storage. Storage above 90 and for long periods apparently destabilize it making it "go bad".
On the positive, it has allowed Cummins to advance engine timing and produce more horses. On a recent trip I avg 9.9 over 1800 mi, towing a 4800# Jeep in the mts and interstate, & over 90 degrees. Follow behind a coach with DEF with a SRC system, and you won't see or smell thing.

A favorite engineer's saying - Anything's easy if you say it fast enough!
You might want to do a Google search for "aqueous urea properties" and do some reading.

Hi sdelerio,
Your post may be accurate for the construction industry. However, the opposite is true for the motor coach industry.

As someone who has a 2013 Holiday Rambler with the Maxxforce 10 engine on order with the factory, what does this mean for me?

It means your diesel engine will require the use of DEF. There will be a separate tank which holds enough DEF for several thousand miles before you get a dash signal to add more fluid. Your engine will be very clean burning and you'll need to spend $10-$12 per gal every so often to buy a gal of DEF.

Source HERE.
As far as I'm concerned, there's been way too much hype and exaggeration on both sides (i.e., SCR and AEGR) of this dispute.
