I just picked up this new bus with a Detroit 6V92 Engine in it, and I'm wondering what the proper Cylinder Compression is. I want to convert it to a MH, but if the engine is messed up, it wont really be worth my time. I can't find any information regarding this. Thanks in advance for any insight!

You need to say what kind or make, model & year of bus you just purchased. Does it run now? Have you had an Oil Analysis done and checked for Antifreeze in the analysis? These are a few things that would help people here to give you good responses to your questions.

Traders, if you are going to spend the BIG BUCKS it takes to convert a BUS, you had better spring for a professional engine survey at a first class Diesel Shop that knows DETROIT DIESEL ENGINES, before you really get into this project.

Good luck and let us know what you do! Also I want to tell you welcome to the IRV2 forums, you have certainly come to a great place for answers.

Best to you - Glenn

Thanks Glenn, it's an MCI(pretty sure-been looking at to many buses), can't remember the year, lol, i'll look it up. The bus has already started to be converted, but the previous owner went through a divorce, and the woman got it, and outta spite sold it to me. Only thing that really needs to be completed in is the back of the bus was design'd to be a "master bedroom" and it needs to be better furnished. Yes it currently runs, but doesnt sound right to me. I've been working on engines for a long time, and it sounds like the compression might be off. Thanks again for any responses!

Traders, the Detroit 6v's and 8v's are really good engines and they are used in boats, military vehicles, portable refrigeration units and generators. I believe the later model MCI's had a 425 HP Turbo 6v in them and are a very common engine. If you are not set up to work on diesels, I would strongly recommend you take it to a good diesel shop and have them check it out. The timing is very critical on a Detroit and it is set with the injector pump and should be checked along with the valve clearances.

Let us know how you come out with the new RV!!

Glenn

thank you very much for your advice, I've got the tools,or access to them(friend works for the local bus company-he's on vacation) problem with the good diesel shop, is i live in a very small area, and all the people around here are mad at me cause the divorced woman sold me the bus, so the last shop i took it to diagnosed 3 things wrong, then the next one i took it to diagnosed 3 completely different things. thanks again!

guess my last reply didnt go through...anyway...the main problem with going to a shop is that all the people around here are really mad at me because we all contended for the MH, but im the one that got it. I've taken it to 2 different shops, each one i went to gave me 3 or 4 DIFFERENT problems. I know for a fact that most of what they told me is wrong(because I've been working on engines since i was a kid) I have access to the parts to work on Diesels(a buddy of mine works at the local bus barn) sadly though he's outta town. Thanks again for any insight!

Hehe, for some reason my replies haven't gone through...basicly the problem is i've taken the thing to 2 different shops, and each gave me a bunch of DIFFERENT things wrong. I suspect it is because we all contended for the MH, and im the one that got it(for 2grand) I have access to the tools to do the job, been working on engines since i was a kid, and a buddy of mine works at the local bus barn(he's on vacation) Thanks again for any insight!

Traders...your previous post did not go through because of the "profanity" that was used.
A post will go in for moderation anytime a swear word (or even something similar in spelling is used).
Sorry for the delay...
