Diesel mileage for my coach...

I recently paid for a computer diagnostic for some issues I've been having with my cruise and other non-functional items, probably related to my brake switch.

In any case, the diag sure does provide a LOT of information that has been recorded from day one of the coaches life. I should say the chassis' life.

One interesting thing that is recorded is total fuel used, total idle time and actual miles traveled.

Well, did the math and I'm getting, based on the raw numbers, almost 12mpg with the 5.9l Cummins and this includes what the 7.5 Onan generator's fuel use. Not too bad.

Had the generator never been used, I'd say I would be north of 13mpg, about what my 02 Ford F-250 gets on average not towing.

Generator use

Generator use has nothing to do with mpg. Your computer is looking at fuel that has gone through the engine, not how much has gone into and out of the tank. If the computer looked at tank input/output then generator use would be relevant.

That's pretty amazing mileage alright. You might want to check it the old fashion way too in order to confirm your findings.

That does sound right. Good point...

Bolt: I have the same info available through a Cummins program I downloaded in 2003. , Power Spec. I can read all the info but did not get the license to change or reset parameters. A Free download but the INLINE adapter in 2003 was less than $100, INLINE 6 adapter now is about $900. My adapter still uses a serial port...
Cummins PowerSpec

Some of the data recorded. Total- Engine hours, fuel used, distance traveled, idle time, cruise time, max vehicle speed and "sweet spot" time. Total Fuel economy, top gear mileage, sudden decelerations. My overall average fuel economy is 11.84. ISB 260.

That's great information!

Given that information, how much can Cummins tune the engine based on driving history?

I have a 2004 ISL and I'd love to have it tuned based on my habits from, say, the last two years.

.
PowerSpec Help

Go to Feature Descriptions, select Engine features, then select your engine model and it will list options for each feature....Including Driver Technique to use each settings.. Cummins would have access to make the changes.

Rick
Agree...that's almost 'too' amazing for a 37' coach.

......
My figures pretty well support his OP. Computer is slightly optimistic... My Computer now shows 11.84 average from 2001, my pencil work indicated 11.4 to 11.7 until late 2012, with ULSD mpg dropped into the upper 10's and occasional 11+. For the last year when biodiesel up to B20 prevailed I'm at 10.7 or so. Realize it will take a while for the recent decrease to affect the overall average.

Same info can be had with the vmspc program from silver leaf. I was surprised when I plugged it in and it showed 11.7mpg over 65k miles for the isb 5.9.

I used the old fashion method and came up with something right around 11 mpg while towing our dolly w/car in our '08 Monaco with ISB 5.9 Cummins and Allison 6 speed. I usually keep my speed around 60-65 mph on the highway. I'm pretty happy with these numbers.

Safe travels everyone.

MPG?.......It is what it is. I quit worrying about it after our first trip. Whatever it is, it won't stop us from going where we want to go.
