Weight is probably the biggest issue. Weight of the coach due to length, cabinets, flooring, bathroom fixtures, fuel capacity, holding tank capacity, cargo, etc. Then there is towing capacity. 5K vs 10K vs 15K. You have to make those choices as to what you require. That will make your decision for you.

Go with a quality used 40' DP. You will be glad you did.

EXACTLY RIGHT!!! Well said Scotty!
The gas vs diesel debate is silly - they are apples and oranges.

A friend who is a full time diesel guy say their a lot more pluses with a diesel than just the motor. Suspension being one of them. My concern buying an older diesel is not the engine but wear and tear on all the other systems on the coach. I guess like you all said, budget, how much used, where we plan to take it , mountains etc. Anything that you all can add to my search is greatly appreciated.

My gas rig has a Ford V-10 with 39,000 miles. My friend has a V-10 with over 300,000 miles on it. How long do you expect to live?

I always keep my recommendation simple, and just say if budget allows go diesel.

My last gasser weighed 10,000lb and got 6 mpg.
My current diesel weighs 20,000 and gets 11.5 mpg.
Engine performance is about equal.

You have to understand that anything done to a diesel engine is expensive. Gas burners can be repaired much more economically. Both will probably live for more miles than you will ever put on one, unless you just drive it all the time like the guy with 300k must do. I think the diesel periodic maintenance is more than gas, but maybe not much more. Most of the diesels run longer between oil changes. But, filters are higher, and there are usually more fuel filters to deal with. You also have to be careful with the diesel fuel as it can grow algae. Its critical that diesel fuel is clean and fresh. The other part of the equation with most diesels is they ride on air suspension and have air brakes. Great if they work properly. Otherwise its a trip to the truck shop. Again - those repairs won't be cheap. Gas burners generally use a hydraulic power brake system and ride on conventional metal springs. So there are more things that can go wrong on a diesel unit, particularly on an older unit. You just have to decide if the better air bag ride is something you want as well as the usual higher efficiency of the diesel. Like one of the other posters said, it depends on your budget. Lots of great coaches out there in both configurations. But it really is apples and oranges to a great degree.

We have a 36 foot W24 chassis with the 8.1 GM. Works great for us, rides and handles nice has plenty of power even when towing our Dinghy.

We chose to go with an older 40' DP instead of a later model gasser. We have never regretted the decision!

This same topic occurs every so often. The facts are essentially unchanged from last time, but the current responses are more logical and less emotional (There is less of: "My choice is the only choice").

Be very careful. Nothing worse than hitting 60 and finding the IRS wants to talk to you about some write-offs. Ask a trusted tax pro
