Diesel rough ride - help !!

We have had several gas motorhomes and have read for many years about the Cadillac ride quality of owning a diesel. When we retired we cash in our savings and just purchased a new 2014 Fleetwood Excursion 33D.

We live in Arizona and because of the summer heat many of our freeways has patches and crack fillers. Well this RV about shakes our teeth out on these roads. We have reduced the tire air pressure as low as we can go for the coach weight and had the ride height checked.

Do any diesels really have this cloud like ride on rougher freeways or were we sold a bill of goods.

We are very disappointed!

The bigger and longer they are the better the ride, in general terms. My 36 ft. Endeavor rides better than my friend's 35 ft. Neptune but no nearly as good as my other friend's 40' Endeavor. All are appx. the same age and miles.

Don't mean to seem silly, but if airbag equipped...are they inflated? I forgot to do that once, like riding a brick.

Both of our diesel motorhomes have been on a Freightliner XC chassis and have ridden much, much better than our previous gas motorhomes. I second the above comment, if your diesel rides that rough, something is wrong.

OK, chassis issue. Go to a freightliner dealer.

RikR,

Maybe you should test drive another new coach or two to compare ride. Perhaps a different length or brand.

Tire thump and rattles on rough roads are one thing, but a rough ride sounds like a problem.

cheers,
Joopy

With air bags, thinking ride would be all about tire pressures and ride height. I read you've set/checked them, but maybe it's time to give them a double check? Is it possible they used the incorrect ride height for YOUR coach?

First thing is to check your tire pressure. If they are filled to the max pressure on the sidewalk which some dealers do at delivery that is your problem.

I recently did some research on this regarding a 2008 Monaco RV which road rough. I was told by several sources that either the tire pressure was not set properly or the ride height was wrong. For the tire pressure you would need to weigh the RV and compare that to the recommended tire manufacturer's specs. For the ride height you should be able to call Fleetwood tech support and they can tell you the ride height for that model and how it is measured, e.g., bag plate to bag plate. From there you can check with a local chassis service center to have them measure / inspect the air bag setup.

Hope that helps -
