Diesel yearly service
So I did a search without finding exactly what I was looking for, so sorry if this was covered and I missed it.
Just curious if anyone has ever put together a yearly service plan. Its getting closer to spring and I'm getting the bug to get back out camping. This will be my first year with the DP and just want to make sure I'm covering all the proper maintenance. I bought it used and dont have a service manual so just want to create one. So everyones input would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to create a checklist of things I should be doing
1) At each fuel fill up. Like empty water from air tank using petcock.
2) At start of each trip like tire pressure. (not the typical antenna down steps up) but vehicle maintenance stuff.
3) At the begining of each season.
4) At a mileage interval that goes beyond each year.
What I have planned for this spring is:
Replace the oil, air, fuel, hydraulic filters as well as oil,
Check transmission fluid
Radiator level. I also saw the level of SCA additive to the coolant was important. (Not even sure how to check that).
Lube chassis.
Getting new tires so not really messing with them other than proper PSI to get to shop.

Hi greatlakes,
For the automotive part only, this is what I do on the annual servicing.
1. Change engine oil
2. Change engine oil filter
3. Change fuel water separator
4. Change fuel filter
5. Change air dryer filter every 2 years
6. Change tranny fluid and filters every 6 years (TranSynd). Check fluid during the year.
7. Grease chassis
8. Change coolant every 6 years. Add coolant extender every 3 years. I use Final Charge extended life coolant (red).
9. Drain air from all 3 tanks
If the coolant is red, you may not need SCA added (change every 6 years). If the coolant is green, SCA is needed and the coolant needs changing every 3 years.
For the generator:
1. Change oil
2. Change oil filter
3. Change coolant per #6 mentioned above
4. Change air filter every 3 years
At a fuel stop I get fuel and do a walk around. Tires (at the tire) are checked 2 times a year. I have a TPMS so I can check them from the dash.

What is your rational for the 6 year interval on transmission fluid & filter.

Before TranSynd it was every 3 year change. With TranSynd I went to 6 years based on the recommendation from Allison. So far the fluid has done well. Color stays good and the level stays good.

Allison listed fluid analysis as the preferred method of determining fluid change intervals. Regardless, the filters should be changed on a 36 month schedule and if no fluid testing the fluid on a 48 month schedule.

Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCA) are added to you coolant (green) to help protect your cylinder liners from pitting. Cummins has test strips that are dipped into the coolant and test for these levels. Based on the results, there are coolant filters with different levels of SCA's you can purchase in order to maintain the proper levels of protection. I would recommend changing your coolant filter everytime you change engine oil.

I am curious why no one mentions when to change the oil in the rear axle (pumpkin)? Some need to be changed annually?

Yes I did a search and typically get more of a owners manual than a service manual

True, Meritor recommends checking the rear axle oil at 12 months, and change at 24 months (at least on my Freightliner chassis).
I switched the rear axle oil to synthetic Mobil 1 75-90 gear oil. I will now be on a 5-year schedule for drain and refill of the rear axle.
