Your RV's ice maker requires water pressure to work, so dipping the feed into a jug of water won't work.
A suggestion: Set up a taste comparison. Fill two glasses of soda (or whatever the family drinks) and use store-bought ice in one glass and RV-made ice in the other. I would bet they won't know the difference.

Although I agree with you regarding just using the ice maker, and they won't know the difference, buying a bag of ice is much more convenient and much cheaper than a lot of the wild suggestions made here.
At the start of every trip we fill our ice container with a bag of store bought ice($1.89), and then turn on the ice maker. We have yet to need to buy ice on the road as the ice maker keeps up with our demand, and it comes out really clear. But if we did need it spending another few bucks would be well worth it. I wouldn't mess with anything like pumps, or dismantling the ice maker supply hose.
After spending all the money on the MH, gas, CG fees ect while traveling I would hardly worry about spending $1.89 on a bag of ice, so I can enjoy my favorite beverages on ice.
