DirecTV

I have a 2003 37' coachmen and trying to get my TV going on it. It has the KVH Tracvision on it and they told me it was set up for Dishnet . I have Direct tv at the house with 2 receivers and was curious if i could just use one of my home receivers? Is this a good setup or do i need to upgrade?

You can use one of your direct tv receivers but you will have to convert the dish to Direct tv It may be just setting some dip switches

KVH website says they work with both. Need more info on the model of the dish to tell how to switch it back to direct tv.

get the model # and look at the KVH website. It'll tell you want you need to switch over to Directv. Best of luck, let us know how it works out, I'm looking for a satelitte system for Directv instead of setting up my slimline antenna on the ground and manually pointing it.

when i updated the software for kvh r4sl, i was just setting a parameter for dish (as oppose to direct), no dipswitch settings. per your version of the anyenna, it could be different but you can call kvh to find out (keep expectations low towards their service though).

I have a 2003 vintage KVH Tracvision also. I was told it was obsolete and would no longer work. If you find differently please post so I can track down an answer. Thank you.

The KVH Tracvision SF that came with my 2004 coach became obsolete and would not reliably find the Direct satellites. Mostly selected the wrong one and it was an ax fight to get it to use another (correct) one. The cost of upgrading it in 2008 was half the price of a new one, so I bit the bullet for a new R4SL. Now the R4SL needs an upgrade, but at least it still finds the right satellites. It just takes longer some of the time.

On my R4SL, a switch from Direct to Dish requires a hardware module and a software change. Later versions of the R4SL need only software change, or in the very latest, simply a software command to change to a different set of satellites.

Part of the question: Does your DirecTV receiver require SWM, the HR 24 & 44 do because they must simultaneously look at multiple satellites for hdtv. If you want to watch localized channels 2-99, you need SWM5, otherwise you can get by with SWM3. SWM is Single Wire Multiple satellite. If you want to stay with KVH, visit their website and then call their customer service after you have educated yourself about their products and what you want to do.... Gregg

Although I'm not a big fan of any dome satellite antenna, you might want to look at one of the Winegard units (the G2(portable with optional roof mount kit), or Roadtrip Mission (roof mount only)), simply for the fact that changing from Dish to Direct or back, is simply a switch setting inside the antenna. No hardware changes, no software changes or upgrades. Of course at some point Dish or Direct may have to change satellite positions, but at this time it should be stable for a while, especially the DirecTV side.

SD or HD?

The 'domes' and flat in-motion antennas for DirecTv are Standard Definition. They see one satellite only. If you want High Definition when parked, the Winegaard Trav'ler or some off brand antenna like the one on my new used Winnebago is needed.

RF Mogul is now marketing a new sat system since MotoSat is out of business. Easy to convert from Dish to Direct or back. The controller is just a setting change to convert it.
We have the MotoSat HD and I ordered the new controller. Not as cheap as a dome unit but cheaper than replacing the whole unit.
Also, be aware that Direct shut down one repeater on one sat so some sat controllers are now needing replacing or upgrading. Ours burned out just after the change so we have to buy a new one anyway.

Winegaard Trav'ler

Best thing we ever did was change our tracvision to a Winegaard Trav'ler. This thing is a full size dish same as one set up on the ground. All automatic just turn it on and it stows right down on your roof.

Ditto. My Winegard Trav'lr has been totally awesome. If you want to be done with sat antenna problems, get the Trav'lr. There are different Trav'lr models depending on whether you are using DirecTV or Dish. The DirectTv model is easily converted to Dish, but the Dish model is hard to convert to DirecTV.
