I have done a lot of maintenance on my coach, except for the air filter. My filter gauge was showing just a little red so I thought I would leave the filter until next time. Being curious, I decided to pull the filter out and take a look. It isn't that hard to do but is still somewhat of a chore.

What a surprise!. The filter was filthy and it makes me wonder how reliable these gauges really are.

I bought and installed a new filter and took "Battle Star Galactica" for a spin. I noticed immediately there was a lot more power. Time will tell about the gas mileage but if power is an indicator I should see an increase.

If you have a used coach, like I do, do not assume anything and don't trust what you have been told by the former owner/dealer unless you can verify. Like Reagan said, "Trust but verify".

Also, don't trust the gauge......

Way too true . Visual is the best test.
You will probably notice smother shifting at a lower RPM; if your coach uses a TPS.

These guages are just a referance. If it moves at all clean or replace your air filter.

That "little red" on the filter minder was telling you it is time to change the filter NOW! Red means you have an urgent problem, not something that can wait awhile. Next time you will know.

We have had our rig for three years, 04 Cummins ISC on a Freightliner chassis. I don't think that little gauge hasn't moved off the lowest reading much at all. The canister the filter is in is huge! How tough is it to get the filter out for inspection? Also can they be cleaned at all or just replaced?

The indicator uses vacuum from the intake on the engine side of the filter. If the hose is cracked or otherwise leaking it will move the indicator less or not at all. Likewise any openings in the intake past the filter will let dirt get to your engine.

Filter life depends on conditions of use; amount of dust; original equipment filters are a throw away. Even blowing with compressed air can damage the filter. Engine makers have rules about cleanable filters. Check your engine owners manual. Indicators can be tested/replaced if necessary.
Ease/difficulty of replacement , depends on the coach. Mine 5 mins, includes clearing the bed. Filter price, some RVers are shopping on-line, other posts on pricing, finding replacement.
Cannister filter, when you have it out, tap it on the ground and shake the filter with the inlet down, you'll be supprised what comes out.
