Discount Tire "No 19.5 Signs"

I love Discount Tire. Have bought my tires from them the past 25 years.

But in their shop here in Arlington, TX there is a sign posted on the work stations "No 19.5!"

My coach takes 19.5" tires and they won't even give me pricing on them, the mgr. says they aren't allowed to handle them, sell them, or service them.

Some liability issue, last year I was in the store getting new tires on the car and one of the techs began to tell me about something happening at one of their stores in the Northwest, and was cut off by the Mgr.

Sad, because I would use them in a heartbeat if they didn't have that issue.

Anyway, their advertising here irritates me sometimes because they have that rule in place.....

Just venting.....I'm sure there is a good reason for it.

Cars and light trucks only. I once took my 5th wheel with 15" tires to have them balanced. The manager said trailer tires don't need balancing and he wouldn't do them. What he really was saying is that they are plenty busy and don't want their limited space cluttered with big rigs. The Firestone shop across the street was much more accommodating.
Anyway, I feel much more confident in using a good shop that sees big tires day in and day out.

I was told the same thing at the Waxahachie store. Go to Pete's Tire in Waxahachie. Nice folks.

The no 19.5 rule is company wide. They are not the only ones that won't touch them. It has something to do with the rim design. The only place I found in my area that would work on or sell them was Les Schwab.

I understand (from a little birdee) that an employee was killed when the tire/rim exploded and OSHA told DT to install cages to work on them and provide proper training, which DT Mgmt said it would just stop selling/servicing 19.5 altogether instead of implementing that change. I agree with a prior post here, I'd much rather have a truck place that's familiar with them do these tires anyway.

I'm gonna have these folks to my install for me. Been around a long time and they take care of ambulance/police/fire vehicles with their mobile units too. They know the ropes for sure....

What store in Arlington at 20 and cooper they have a cage the air them up in

I believe they had an issue years back with someone getting injured on the larger tire size and therefore quit handling and servicing them. I think it had something to do with a split rim issue when they were still a popular item on trucks.

Last time I got tires on my Camry, Discount now has cages to air the smaller auto tires.

Lincolnboy2: How is the pricing at Rick's? Would you know if they also offer the "off-brands", a.k.a., the Chinese tires?

Don't need tires yet but will next year.

The worst part of the DT fiasco was that the refused to service tires they already sold. I was stuck with 6 tires that were only a year old and no service when one after another they started forming bubbles in the side walls. Do not remember the brand but it was an 'in house' only brand. So I ended up buying a full set of Bridgestones from a truck tire dealer to replace the set I purchased from DT only 2.5 yrs and 8k miles earlier.

All because they refuse to properly train their employees on the products they were already selling.

I am sure the decision was made by their legal department. I got the same "No Way" from three other tire dealers in my area. Only Les Schwab would touch them.

In my opinion, if you want/need a truck-size tire, go to a commercial, i.e. truck, tire dealer. They have the product selection, experience and skills to deal with them and most will get the job done properly.

Although, to be honest, the 265/60R18's on my car aren't much smaller than the typical 19.5" RV tire and Discount Tire handles them and does a decent job.

I tried three truck tire dealers here that would not touch them. All three said their legal department was the reason.
