Do I need to change the oil

I own a 2016 Winnebago Itasca with a 400hp Cummins. The unit has 3,000 miles and I'm about to store it for the winter since I live in the northeast. Do you recommend that I change my oil and filter even though the engine only has 3,000 miles or is it ok to let it sit for the winter and change the oil next year.

Look in your owners manuals. If they read like mine, you should not store it with used oil. If you're like most of us, you'll be able to go until next fall before changing it again.

If you are going to do the changes in the spring, do it now. If you're going to change the oil and filters next fall just put it into storage.

Oil doesn't spoil. Change it when due and don't worry about it. It's just going to lay there all winter doing nothing anyway.

Cummins calls for oil change by mileage OR months. With our ISL I only put about 3-4000 miles per year also. We change our oil each spring once we take the MH out of storage.

I asked this same question about my Vette to someone who is a retired engineer from GM who worked on the oil life monitor system. To summarize what he said, change it once a year or by mileage and if you store it change before storage. I was asking a similar question because I put very low miles on the Vette last year.

To expand on this, the reason to change the oil "before" putting it in storage is to remove the acids in the oil that are a normal byproduct of combustion.

This old engine man agrees 100%. The most important thing before storing that engine is change the oil, get rid of the acids and contaminants.

The best practice would be to change your oil and filters before storing. If I remember right Cummins states you should change your oil at 15000 miles or annually regardless of mileage.

I thought Mobil 1 is for gas engines and Mobil Delvac synthetic is for diesel engines.

Acid is the culprit. We were trained back when I was a mechanic that the acids in used oil will etch the bearings and journals if left to soak for extended periods.

You need to check your owner's manual. To maintain your warranty, you probably have to do a full service at six months or six thousand miles. The period is then one year after that. The first six months depends on when it was put in service, and less mileage doesn't matter.

My quandary is that I also like to change oil before the winter break (to remove the acids), but I've only gone less than 400 miles since Cummins rebuilt the top end and we like to use it even during the winter.
