I drain the air tanks at the end of each use as part of the returning clean up. When I say drain, I mean I pull the cables but usually very little comes out. More important is to keep up with desiccant filter changes to help minimize the amount of moisture that gets into the tanks.

Do you mean dump the air from the tanks? If you mean drain the moisture from them, my system has an air drier, so I don't think there is a need to drain anything. Anyway, I have never done this either.

Most air tanks have automatic dryers but the lanyards should be pulled periodically (3-6 mos) to insure no moisture is present.

Twice a year. Spring and Fall. I hardly get anything but we do live in New Mexico where the average humidity is about 15%. If I lived in Florida I’d do it more often.

I pull the lanyards on the tanks whenever I do a close inspection on the front tires. Just so happens that the 3 lanyards are right there behind the left front tire.

S.O.P. when I was a transit driver was to do it every morning as part of the pre-trip walk-round. Our coaches has automatic driers, but it was quite a surprise how much water came out some times.
The coaches were on the road about 18 hours a day, so that's a lot more activity than the typical RV. Washington State isn't particularly humid, so I would guess an RV wouldn't need more often than once every three months in a climate like ours would be fine. On the Eastern seaboard, particularly NJ and south, I'd be tempted to do it once a month and see what you get.

Automatic air tank drain valves work when the tank pressure changes, to purge contaminants or water from the tanks. When MH is sitting, not being used the automatic valve doesn't function. System is more efficient in OTR vehicles that are in constant operation.
I understand the heater (12 volt) operates only in cold weather.

My tanks don't have lanyards, not do the tank valves have a place for a lanyard. Requires crawling under with a tool to open the tank drains. You can guess how often I do that! My solution to that is to make sure my automatic air dryer gets changed regularly, and usually a bit before the 36 month recommended change interval. I depend on it do the drying, so want it to be in top notch condition.
It's a Freightliner XC with the ZF IFS. Lanyards just aren't practical with that set-up.
