Do you stop at weigh stations?

On my way home from Texas the other day, I passed several weigh stations. I kept wondering if I was supposed to go in and get weighed? I thought they were for commercial vehicles only, but I saw a pick-up w/ 5th wheel in there too.

This is only for the government weigh stations along interstates, not the 'how much do I weigh' deal.

No need to stop in an RV.

If you are a commercial hauler and pulling travel trailers and or motor homes for profit than yes they do need to stop and get weighed. But private RV's like yours and private travel trailers are exempt from them.

I have heard that the "government weigh stations" in some states do the 'how much do I weigh' deal, as a courtesy, (aka: free).
Perhaps that's why the pick-up w/ 5th wheel was there??

My guess is the 5th wheel was a new RV from the factory being moved by a commercial hauler. They are required to cross the scales & have log books.

Was the scale actually open? Many weigh stations leave the scales on when "closed" which allows folks like us to take advantage of getting axle weights.

Otherwise, getting weighed is not required for personal use.

Don, I never knew that! I'll have to check that out next time I pass one that is closed! Thanks!

I wondered this too when coming home from Ocean City, MD. The sign said 'All Vehicles over 12,000# must enter weight station."
I was thinking 'ALL VEHICLES' ????

All weigh stations in Oregon are left on when unattended. I've weighed my MH several times there. Depending on the layout of the particular station it's sometimes possible to do a 4 corner weighing.

Some states have signs posted who needs to weigh or who is excluded.
I have seen some say RV's Exempt
I have seen some say Buses Required. (because I drive as a Motor Coach Driver I have to pay attention but usually do the homework before I set out on the road).

Thanks for all of the info. I think the 5th wheel threw my off.

I saw the open scales in OR, I thought that was cool. I didn't bother weighing my FJ and X20E, but next year I'll probably take advantage in the Outlaw w/ FJ toad.

I was curious when I saw the signs in MD also, went to DOT web site and it included "motor coaches" then had to research what MD's definition of motor coach (commercial bus). So I have just driven pass and have not been stopped.

I wonder of we will be required to stop at some point in the future. Lots of folks have their RVs overloaded but don't know it. It's a gov revenue opportunity waiting to happen.
