Door not closing?

Hi Guys,

Anyone have this problem?
My RV door closes fine except for the last 8 inches or so at the top.
When we are on rough roads it rattles like crazy and drives ME crazy!

2009 Fleetwood Southwind 34G

Thanks for the input.

The year make and model might help as those owners could chime in.

On my door the previous owner used some stick on insulation at the top of the door to tighten it . It was placed on the inside screen door and outside frame.

Maybe move the striker bolt in a little and the whole door will close tighter.

If you close the door as firmly as possible without slamming it how many "clicks" do you hear? .... there should be two. An intermediary latching and a final (tight) latching.

Either the door or motorhome frame is sprung. Most likely the door. Doors can be straightened.

We used to tweak doors on the trucks that were not closing even. Just take a short piece of 2x4 wrapped up in a few shop rags, put it in the bottom and give a good push on the top of the door. Check your progress after each try. It should start to line up quickly.
Happy Glamping.

The actual rattling would indicate the adjustment needs to be tightened. The striker bolt can be moved easily to accomplish tightening..but it can easily be adjusted too much. If overdone the door can be really tough to get open. Most body shops are familiar with this. Don't forget to lock the deadbolt to see what effect that has on it.

Generally speaking, if the door doesn't close far enough to catch the 2nd latchpoint, the striker post should be moved OUTWARD (away from the coach and toward the person entering).

If the door has an uneven gap (even on the hinge side but uneven on the handle side) , the door can be tweaked slightly (as mentioned above).

The door seals look badly deformed- especially at the top. I'd want to completely replace them before trying any door adjustments and go from there. Dead bolt position won't make any difference- it either works or it doesn't. The bolt just goes into the square hole in the door frame. After the seals are done the 2X4 with rags sounds like a a good idea if it's still loose fitting near the top. Good luck with the repairs and let us know how it worked out.
