DP differential lube mystery

Changing the differential lube in my 96 Vectra Dp today. Manual calls for 17 pints, Freightliner support says the same. To fill it to the fill hole it would take about double that(It drained about double). Someone here must have run into this before. XC-21RDX chassis with Rockwell RS15 diff.

I suspect there is a mistake and the 17 should have been quarts.

I changed the diff oil in my 2002 Windsor last year. It took 12 quarts, which is what drained out of it. .

Found a couple of Rockwell diagrams for this axle and mine is upside down in comparison which would fill the axle housings 3/4 full instead of 1/4 full. This would explain the extra lube needed to fill to the fill hole. It took about 28 pints.

The oil level is supposed to be 1/2" below the fill hole according to the axle mfgr. I use my index finger as a gauge, if I can feel oil with my fingertip it's full. From your fingertip to first joint is approx. 1/2"
