DP with side radiator overheating. Fan controller problem.

2004 Country Coach, Cummings ISC 350, side radiator. It's started heating up and I have determined the fan is not activating at all. I learned this by separating the 6 pin connector which put the hydraulic fan into high speed default and then the temp stays in the normal.

I now want to figure out what is causing the fan to not activate? How can I troubleshoot a cause? What is a fix? If I can't find a fix, Can I go on a 1000 mile trip with the connector open and the fan on high in default condition?

I have a 2000 Country Coach and ran ours on the default high for 2 years until I fixed the problem. You will hear more noise, kick up a lot of dust on dirt roads and the engine will run cooler then it should but will be fine.

My problem was the sensors (air and water temperature) were bad making the fan go to default. Not the same as your problem so not much help there.

When we had the '00 Dutch Star on FL chassis I had the controller go out. FL told me which wires to disconnect and continue on. Fuel mileage went down, the engine temp was lower and it did kick up more dust. Other than that it worked fine. I suspect the CC would be the same.

I ran for about a year not knowing that fan was on high continuously until I attended the Freightliner school.. They changed out the fan controller and it has worked fine since then..
I didn't have any damage to my engine as my engine temps was always low due to high fan. As far as I can tell it only gave me lower mileage.

A friend I mine just converted his CC to the wax valve at Source and solved his overheating problem.

Just a little more wear and tear on the fan motor and worse mpg. My fan was in default when I bought the coach and drove it for a year and a half like that until I discovered the problem. MPG went up from 6 to 7 1/2 - 8 after fixing it.

Thank you all for contributing to my search for understanding my fan problem. I did contact SOURCE as advised above. Talked to Scott their engineer who explained Source began business as a shop to replace the fan controller module and after "seeing so many bad controllers, we developed a fix to replace the electronic controller with a simple heat valve to control the fan".

Source wants $700. for their kit which is just a heat valve, 2 hoses and a few fittings. Seems too much money to me but I think a replacement electronic controller is 800 to $1000. I think the kit would fix my problem and be a long term fix.

I'd be happier if the kit was $400. I going to think about this for awhile.

I am wondering if the sensor(s) may be causing the problem since the fan comes on when I separate the 6 pin connector.

The fan will default to the maximum speed if you pull the fuse also so I am not sure if your sensor is the problem. I do know you will be happier like my friend is if you spend that $700 and no longer have to worry.

Typically if a sensor is bad the fan is to default to always on high speed, in your case the fan was not running until you disconnected so may not be a sensor.

I have attached some information and test procedures for testing the fan controller you may want to use.

Hello Steve just came across this thread. I have 02 country coach magna with some overheating issues. I have checked everything out and replaced the sensors and thermostatic and now I'm realizing after more research about the faulty dan loss fan controls. Talked with the guy at source engineering and it seems the wax valve was how they all went back in the day until the EPA got involved and screwed it all up. Just wanted to make sure you are happy with you choice and change out? It seems the wax valve stays on longer and more often so keeping the engine running a bit cooler but Im sure loosing MPG at maybe the downside? What's you thoughts?

Steve , hasn't been onto the site in more that a year , so you may not get an answer to your question .

If an answer doesn't come through , consider starting your own thread with the question in the chassis or owners forums .

You can buy the wax valves for less than 200 out of whitehouse in England. There's several posts on here naming them and how to find their website.
