The state department says not to drive to Mexico, so unless you have some very specific (and very recent ) knowledge of how to stay safe down there, a prudent person won't. No need to have a bad experience.

So, just to be clear, you have never driven there or RVed there but you wouldn't go there unless you were in a tank. Ok then.

Well I'm not the one who made that comment, but I live in San Antonio and have been to Mexico recently. I wouldn't drive there. I don't have to personally experience what is in the news to understand the danger.

First let me state I've never driven myself in Mexico, but I think a lot of you that haven't been to Mexico or have been to the border towns like Juarez and Tijuana are basing your judgements on a small area of the county. I've driven in Michigan, while I felt safe walking around Mackinaw City and Makinac Island, I wouldn't walk around Flint, or Detroit.... We spent a week in La Paz and the front desk recommended a restaurant a couple blocks from our hotel, I thought "are they crazy this is Mexico, who would walk around town?, but we gave it a try, guess what in La Paz, the town was full of families out for an evening stroll, lots of proud moms and dads with their little kids, less street crime than going downtown or to the "U" district here in Seattle... Of course La Paz is a little off the typical tourist area and so isn't full of drunk american tourist spilling out of the tequila shot bars like Cabo and Mazatlan.

Always curious. Which states did you visit. Which cities. They obviously left you with a bad impression. We have driven and visited extensively reasonably recently in most of the Mexican States and many of the cities. There are definitely a few places I would avoid but overall can't remember anything that would scare me into needing a freakin tank. Curious where you were that you wouldn't recommend driving there. I know personally we don't like driving in big cities and Tijuana is a city I wanted to be through quickly. I didn't like driving through the tunnels in Guanajuato and Puebla is just too darn busy. Mexico city is just WAY to busy and I'll never drive there, not too mention they don't allow heavy vehicles (anything with duallys) in the city.
As far as how to stay safe in Mexico or any other place, pretty like anywhere, use your head for more than a hat rack and you'll be just fine. Get informed and be respectful, takes you along way.

Mexico Travel Warning has a lot of specific information about individual states. This applies to all of Mexico:
"U.S. citizens are encouraged to lower their personal profiles and to avoid displaying indicators of wealth such as expensive-looking jewelry, watches, or cameras. U.S. citizens are encouraged to maintain awareness of their surroundings and avoid situations in which they may be isolated or stand out as potential victims."
So back to the original question, would you drive your $500,000 motor home in Mexico?

I just drove my M/H back into the US at Sonoyta AZ after a week stay just 60 miles south of the border. I drove my M/H from Tijuana, east to Puerto Panasco, Sonora on the toll road. No problems, only noting that the roads there are much harder on the RV. Rough payment much of the time. Bought MX insurance for a year because I think I will be in MX more but only near the border. Ins was $211 for a year or $14 per day. Liability only. I didn't have to buy diesel and I prefer to buy it in the US for quality control and ripoffs at the pump. Stayed in an rv park with security. Drove 400 miles in MX. My main cocern is getting towed, repairs and parts in an emergency. So i stay close to the border. I have a nice looking rig. So I know there's risks and I chose to do my thing and weigh the risk/benifits. That's what i think everyone should do. But many people dont have the brain power to do that. Those people should go to Disneyland.

The fact that "security " at the RV park is mentioned. Hum mm......

I lived in Guatemala City. I was an airline pilot working for a Guatemalan airline. I flew specifically to Central America and Mexico. As a pilot traveling from the airports to various hotels and restaurants, I was with locals (fellow crew members) who knew how to keep us relatively safe. As a Gringo you stand out. Throw an RV in the mix you become a spectacle. I befriended some American DEA agents living and working there. We talked, I listened and learned. You can get your throat slit and stuffed in a garbage can. Police are the bad guys most of the time. Sure you can RV there. Many of you have without problems. Means nothing...You take your chances and play the odds in life. Surf in sharky waters, ride motorcycles in busy areas. I've done both. But I understood the risk each time. Those of you RVing in Mexico are swimming in sharky waters. Ok if you do it but a real pity if your running blind and clueless thinking the waters are smooth sailing. One other thing. Paying the drug cartel is a way of life in Mexico. Think about that. The police are corrupt and the cartel makes all the locals pay for things because they can. There is no one to stop them. Sounds like Disneyworld right?? You can have it.

Ref: the preious 2 posts (and several others on this thread). I agree that it's taking risks being in MX but I enjoy many things in MX. I agree, there's more risk in MX, I'm not arguing that! As I said previously, I feel it's an individual decision. I respect anyones' decision. So I hear your arguements. I don't disagree with much of it. I accept the risk and respect your decision. I try to minimse risk and will live with the results. Discussion is very valeable to me. I hope all of us have great and safe adventures!

Great answer Steve. I love to travel to foreign countries. It's trickier now for sure than it was many years ago. Just hard to keep a low profile in an RV. For me it would be like walking alone on a deserted street in Mexico carrying a briefcase. Wonder how many people lurking in the shadows would like to take a peak at what's inside that briefcase. And if they did who would stop them.

If you take an RV of any kind in Mexico, you already have more money than most Mexican, especially in a big RV. I don't think it's a matter of how big, how nice, how new, it's just a matter of circomstance where you may be the unlucky guy that gets in trouble.
Would you drive your $500,000 rig in any part of any town in the USA? Same principle apply I think. I drove in the NY Bronx with a big truck camper towing a nice trailer, at night..., also in the poor, nearly devastated suburb of New Orleans, through Jacksonville and Miami poor distric, was I scared? Yes, but nothing ever happened to me.
Most people travel to normal tourist places, taking normal tourist roads and Mexican are used to see RV in an out.

Certainly agree that every one should have the right to travel to Mexico and hopefully have the knowledge and connections to come out unscathed. Just don't want Joe blow from Wisconsin (no offense) to read this thread and head south without being fully informed.

If you get kidnapped in Mexico, you and your family are pretty much on your own. You have put your loved ones' assets at risk for your own pleasure. You get kidnapped in NYC, you got the NYPD and the FBI on your side.
