Driving a DP in the city...

when in city traffic and driving light to light. what gear do you use...

I use 4th it runs the fan faster and in the heat of vegas, keeps the motor cool

it never goes over 1500 rpms...

some say leave it in 6th... but to me it seems to stop easier and quicker if in 4th...

what say you ??

oh, and I did the same with my 6speed gas motor...

You get to 6th gear between light? If so go ahead and use it!

Exactly.

It's never going to get to sixth gear in city traffic. I have the same ISL and tranny. I need to get up to about 60 mph before it will shift into 6th.

I leave it in 4th so when the jake kicks in it doesn't have to downshift to be effective.

Yes, I use it in the city.

I let the Allison decide what gear it wants to use. Which ever it chooses is fine with me.

Even in hot/city driving, the engine is not working........very hard.
If you are heating up, you might want to take a look at the condition of the radiator and the charge air cooler.............might need a good cleaning. Heating up due to low air flow from being dirty.........?
Look up "Dirty Radiator" and read through them, the only way to properly clean the radiator and the charge air cooler, is to pull them. After several good cleanings........I pulled mine.......shocked at what they looked like inside, between them.......where one can not clean without taking them apart........
Look at post #4 here http://www.irv2.com/forums/f26/rear-...ng-163541.html , I know his is a rear radiator, but the side radiator's get just as dirty.....

Allison is a smart transmission. I put it in "D" and let it do it's thing!

My CAT C-12 and Allison 4060 shift into 6th at ~63mph. What's wrong with that? I can do 65 in 4th which is great in rolling countryside since I can keep the Jake Brake on without it shifting when the brake is applied.

Nope! Usually need to hit 60 to get tranny to upshift. I can then back off to about 58 and it will hold 6th, but any hill at that speed, it will quickly drop back to 5th.
May be different with yours, as your tranny may be programed differently, and you may have a different final drive gear ratio.

I doubt it's much problem putting it in 4 it'll rev higher and not go to 5 or 6 so your wasting fuel . Since you're burning fuel anyway just start the gen and run the house air .. I do that on any hot day anyway. I let the Allison do its thing. One other thought is the chassis ac should be working fine at idle .. Perhaps it needs a charge or service ??

I guess that's why they call it an Automatic Transmission.
