Dutch Star 4004 ISC 350

Over heating on long Pull I 68 North to Kysers Ridge. Anyone else having this prob? Pulling 2010 Crv. Thanks..

Hi fastman,
This all depends. Can you provide more information?
1. What is the outside temp?
2. What speed are you trying to maintain?
3. Are you down shifting manually to keep the RPMs around 2K-2.2K?
4. Define overheating. Does the engine overheat to the point of derating itself?
5. Do you have a "real" coolant temp indicator or are you using the dash gage?

Could be several things. One, have you cleaned your radiator lately? Another is maintaining rpms when climbing. I try for 1700 rpms and downshift if the temp starts to rise.

Check your coolant level, make sure the cooling fins on the radiator are clean and not dirty. Keep your RPMs between 2000 and 2200.

I pulled this hill in early July in my Phaeton ISC 380 pulling a Ford Edge. No overheating problems. Did not manually downshift, transmission handled it adequately on its own. I tend to cruise around 63 mph and don't worry about speed going up mountains. I keep eye on temperature gauge and would manually downshift if needed as others have suggested. I wouldn't think you should have issues so check radiator fins and coolant levels as already mentioned.

If its a rear radiator cooling system, odds are the radiator fins are dirty with oil-slick from the engine oil breather (aka "slobber tube"). Give it a good cleaning.

Thanks All, Yes cleaned radiator, yes oil level good, yes coolant good even checked chemical balance. No did not shift manual. Let tranx do it's own shifting as recommended by Cummins. The degrease thing caught my eye. Road grudd could be coating fins. Yes, dash gage and to the point temp alarm goes off. Temp outside is always above 90 degrees when I make this trip and high humidity....checked engine at truck stop and does not appear hot or smell hot....cools back down to 190 in just a few minutes after stopping...keeps pulling strong even after alarm.....even got behind truck in slow lane and slowed down but didn't help....worse if anything.....thanks everyone...appreciate all the input and help......Ernie in Virginia Beach

Cummins may say to let the tranny do it's own shifting, but on a long grade you should shift it down til the RPM's are 1800-2100. You'll definately see a big difference in temps.

I will agree with this, if I wait for the automatic downshift, engine will start lugging on steep grades and the water temperature will climb rapidly. Try downshifting ahead of the momentum loss and see what the results are.

Clean the radiator stack, be sure and get between the CAC and radiator.
