Question electric step problem

Our electric step doesn't stop running when it opens and closes. What could be the problem?

Welcome to iRV2.

There are a couple of different manufacturers of power steps , can you post what brand and year your dealing with .

More info= better answers
Do the steps run out then immediately back in , or do the steps stop but the motor keeps running.

Yes Sir, as has been stated, you need to post more info so that those of us that have the same step brand/type/model etc. may be able to help you. And, when you say it "doesn't stop running", do you mean the step motor is still running and, is there any noises associated with that continuously running motor like stripped gears etc.?

Does your step EXTEND ok or, does it have issues doing that also? I may have an answer for you but, need more info.

Very Odd, just got out from under my 2001 Winne, reinstalling the step. Found solution to be disintegrated plastic bearings(3) in motor gear. Check a post by "hypoxia" Sep 2013, hope this is the same assembly as yours.. Good luck.. my cost $1.20 plus tax!!

Most likely you have a bad step motor. You can easily rebuild the one you have - plugs are available at parts stores that are the most common problem. Or you can take the old one with you and the parts store can help you with the replacement motor.

It is just a car window motor with a different connection on the end. Much cheaper to use the window motor than to buy a motor from the step manufacturer. For example, mine is a 1992 Ford window motor at a cost of $44.95. The manufacturer motor (very same motor) was $180.00. Only difference in the two was the connection on the end. Changed out the connection, installed it and the steps work beautifully again.

I rebuilt the old motor and carry it as a spare. Inside there were 3 plastic plugs $1.25 plus tax and that was all I needed to repair my old one.

We have been parked for about 3 weeks. Now that we are preparing to get back on the road, The electric step is not retracting. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Mike; anytime you have a problem that's not exactly the same as the original poster's , it's best to start your own post with the question, particularly if you need answers in a hurry. A lot of members will only read the first post before they respond, if they respond at all.
Are your steps Kwikee ? Do you have the manual with the trouble shooting guide?
Kwikee Steps - Power Gear
You can download one from the web site.
Have you checked all the fuses ?Checked for power to the step controller; that's mounted under the coach on the step mounting plate? Checked the screen door alignment of the magnetic switch ?
Tried lubing all the step pivot points?
