electric step problems

One day my steps would not come out so I climbed in and started the diesel. They came out. Then some time later they did the same thing but starting the diesel did not work so I took off the little switch that is mounted on the screen door and door way and looked at it. The one mounted on the coach seemed broken so I replaced it ($17). It worked fine after that for about a month when it was in storage. Then it stopped again. Fooling around with it caused it to work then today I went to the storage just to set in the coach and think. Well it failed again. I took the piece off the screen door and held it next to the piece mounted on the doorway. I could hear a switch or something under the coach tripping each time I moved the magnet piece away from the coach piece. But the steps did on come out.

I am planning on working on it this week but what should I expect? Or what is wrong.

Thanks for any help.
