I live in a county in Illinois that still requires emissions testing of gasoline-powered vehicles over 2 years old. I got a notice yesterday for my motorhome! After I picked myself off the floor, I did some research online and made a phone call. Sure enough, my motorhome has to be tested. I won't know until I get there if it is just the OBD (on board diagnostics) check or the full dyno/tailpipe test.
Has anyone else gone through this? I can't take it in until September, so I can't report back until then. I could probably sell tickets to see it run on the dyno!

In my state vehicles over (I think) 8000 pounds are exempt from emission testing. I have never had to have a motorhome tested in any state I've lived in. And my Astrovan just barely fits in the stall where it is tested. How much are the tickets for watching them do your rig?

Here in the Harris and surrounding counties non-attainment area (that's Houston & suburbs), we have mandatory testing for gassers, but I'm not sure if a MH is excluded. At any rate, the OBDII vehicles just get a computer check for codes - the older ones run on the chassis dyno.

One of the reasons we decided to leave MA when I retired was the reduncy and ridiculsness of some of their laws.

In Feb.'02 we bought a brand new diesel pusher and 2 weeks later you guessed it we had to have a full emissions test, complete with dyno, tailpipe probe, etc. I have often wondered what the heck would have hppened if it had failed.

Don't even get me started on the annual excise tax after the one-time sales tax and the cost of insurance. Nobody is kidding when they say Taxachussetts!, Ken,'04 DSDP....

Before I left Calif. I had to take my coach in for testing. They didn't have room in their facility for the rig so I just parked in the alley behind the shop. They brought out some kind of portable thing on a cart, stuck a probe up the tail pipe and had me run it at different rpms for a set time each, and that was it.

In MD. we took ours and the guy said " Man I can't get that thing in here", wrote us an exemption and that ws it..

Hi All,

Here in NJ you have to take the Motorhome thru regular state inspection, just like any passanger car or truck! They test lights, wipers, brakes and emissions

!!

I think one of the main reasons Bob Graham was elected Governor in florida was one of his main platform items to do away with that $#%^&^% car inspection and tax. It is amazing how we have survived without one all these years. We also have a 6 year driver lic here in Florida. Now if we can just get rid of the heat and the dog ---- knats, we will have arrived.

Took the C in this morning and all they did was equipment. i asked if that was all they did on MH's and was told just for the first two years then they test for emissions also. But they only do a two idle test (High&Low) no dino.

We have to have tested every 2 years. Not much to it, they use a tail pipe probe. Mostly it is the inconvience and cost of doing it that is a pain.

I passed! Today I took the motorhome to get the emissions test done. It was very easy and took only ten minutes. I pulled into the testing facility (close fit). They registered me. They took off the gas cap and tested it for leaks. Didn't find any. I pulled forward and they put a long metal probe in each tailpipe. I put it in park and let it idle. It took about a minuteand a half for the equipment to test the exhaust. I then pulled out the back of the building and the man gave me the printout showing I passed. The maximum allowable hydrocarbons is 300 parts per million. Mine tested at 7. The maximum allowable percentage of carbon monoxide is 3%. Mine tested at 0%. My motorhome has 19,800 miles and has only regular oil changes and the air filter replaced last year at 15,000 miles. I have to do it again in 2 years. Pretty easy and no cost.
