After reading the many horror stories about NOT using these surge/voltage protectors, I have decided to protect my investment by buying either one of these.

My coach (see sig below) is rigged for 30 amp service (I think, please excuse my n00biness, as I haven't had the chance to take her out camping due to the cold weather), and I really need help deciding which one to purchase.

I was reading that you CAN use the 50-amp device on a 30-amp rig, but what is the advantage of that? Isn't that a bit of an overkill??

Again, please excuse my knowledge of motorhome electric power requirements. Thanks in advance.

If your coach is wired for 30 AMP service, there is no additional benefit to having 50 AMP protection. It will cost more $s. Open your electrical bay and check the plug that connects the coach to shore power. On the male plug, three prongs = 30 AMP and 4 prongs = 50 AMP.

There is no advantage I know of (except to the retailer selling you the more expensive 50a protector). If you've got a 30a coach, then get a 30a protector & pocket the price difference for beer money.

Only advantage is if you plan to move to a newer coach with 50amp...

If you provide your location chances are members here could recommend an installer for you.

Buy a portable unit and it does not need to be installed. Also, shop around they'll vary over $100 in price.

I personally would go with the 50 amp portable one. Easy to adapt down, and you can take it with you to you next rig without having to be an electrician.

I agree with the recommendations to stay with the 30 amp if that is indeed what your coach is. Especially if you go with the portable unit as you will want to lock it to the CG's shore power post. I use a padlock and chain. Plus you won't have to screw around finding or making a reverse pigtail for it.

One suggestion. Do not get a 50 amp SG to use on a 30 amp rig thinking you can use it if/when you get a 50 amp RV. My TRC SG said to use the 50 amp on a 30 amp rig only temporarily...don't know why.

Progressive Industries is the PT-50C (portable) home. You may wish to call them for expert advice regarding 50A vs. 30A for your model coach.

Talk is cheap. The worse you can get for asking for something is a "no."
