Angry Engine starting problems

I now have a 1979 Itasca motorhome that has set since 2008. Installed new plugs and wires. Batteries stolen so purchased a new 900-1000 CCA. Engine drags and draws down the battery. Had previously temp started it on starting fluid and as long as I hit it with squirts it ran. Did that for a very short period. Tried some gas through the carb but flooded it. Was trying to get the pump to move gas from the tank. Since then, pulled the plugs and it turned over slowly. Probably ran the battery down 1st try. Recharged the battery and couldn't turn it over. Should I get a second battery in parallel or change out the starter? Help. Engine is a Chevy 454.

Clean all the ground connections, battery cable to frame , frame to block, you may even need to drop the starter and make sure it hasn't developed rust between the starter and block.
I wouldn't rule out the need for a replacement starter, internal rust may have developed in that amount of time . But you could try jumping from another vehicle, to see if you get an in crease in cranking speed.
NOTE: Never crank for more that 30 seconds at a time and give the starter/ battery 3>5 mins to cool before cranking again.

EDIT: On a re-read of your post, I see " Recharged battery and couldn't turn it over. "
Time to remove the starter for bench testing. Possible replacement.

Itasca motorhome that has set since 2008

Gasoline that is six years old should be removed and replaced with fresh gas. Dumping fresh gas in with the old does not fix the stale gas. I would use SeaFoam additive in the gasoline to help clean existing varnish in the system.
