engine temperature

I have a 2009 sportscoach, w/ 425 cummins diesel, coming back from fla in april, the outside temp was 75-80, I was running approx 65 mph...the temp guage would rise up to 210-218 degrees, then the fan wd kick on & the temp wd come back down. this happened on & off every 5-10 minutes, until the next day when I was in a cooler climate,in which the guage remained the same or "normal".........is this normal for rear engine, with rear mount radiator?
thks Jim

When was the last time you had the radiator cleaned? Stuck thermostat, just a couple of thoughts.

The upper limit of 218 is a little high. I do a lot of mountain driving in the west and mine will regularly get up to ~212 area when the fan cuts in. This is perfectly normal for an EPA-07 engine.

However I agree with the radiator cleaning question. I do mine every year using Extreme Simple Green

I'm using the SilverLeaf and my fan comes on at 204deg then drops to 196deg but i'm running a Cat C9 with a side radiator. As stated you may need to look at getting the radiator cleaned if you have been over some dusty roads

Wash out the radiator fins using air conditioner coil (foaming) cleaner_follow directions. It cannot do harm to your radiator, it is simply a strong detergent to loosen caked on dirt. I would use the hose from the engine-side of the radiator to prevent spraying the dirt onto the engine. I did this a few times on my cars to remove baked-in bugs and road dirt.

eng temp

to bobged, maybe the fan is kicking on @ 212 or so, do you have a rear mounted radiator? if you use extreme simple green, to flush fins, do you spray the solution from the engine side, or the backside?how do you get to the engine side, the fan shroud cover prevents from getting to eng side.
thks jim
