1997 was a change over year for Cummins , from 12 valve configuration to 24 valve, so wiring on the 24 valve is much more complex.

Engine serial number, is on the , data plate, on the side of the timing gear housing, as per this diagram. The location is the same for both the 5.9 and 8.1 Cummins engines.
